I feel like he's getting worse.

My 3 yr old has expressive and receptive delays along with sensory issues.
Since he's been home from ESY it's been bad with his excessive delays. I left my job in May when he turned 3 b.c his EI ended and after the evals at the local preschool he was accepted into their pop programs.
So, he went from daycare for about 9 hours a day since 3 months that he loved b.c he loves to learn and loves structure to preschool pop on the bus everyday till the end of August. Since he's been home it's been tough. He yells out "Upstairs!" when he doesn't know what else to say. It's like his comfort word and upstairs is his blanky he holds when he needs to.
When he gets frustrated he also wants to bite something. Never a person b.c he's really very passive, but a toy or chair. Nothing real. Not food b.c he only has certain foods he I'll eat.
My sister is a speech therapist and said give it some time in school for him ro get back into a routine and structure b.c he thrives on structure.
Just frustrating b.c he's needing more and more attention. Having more tantrums and gettinh frustrated more and not fully understanding things.
Any advise or is this somewhat normal after ESY or in the summer? Maybe the age... Terrible 3 mixed with his delays?
Thanks!

I feel like he's getting worse.

Totally normal. The kids lose their structure during the vacations and it's hard on them. When my daughter was 3ish she was a complete nightmare. Screamed and cried all day while not in school. Some days I just sat and cried myself because I didn't know what to do. Some days I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. I will tell you that it does get easier. Once she got more language the tantrums lessened a great deal. The kids get frustrated because they can't communicate. Now that she is in elementary school it's like a whole new world. She is learning more which is helping with the frustrations and we get a good 23 hours a day of her being happy and not whining/screaming.

I have a few friends that send their kids to special needs camp when they are off from school and it helps them alot. You may want to look into that for next summer's break.

Thak you sooo much for responding! Makes me feel so much better. I had a feeling that was it, but the tantrums. They can make me nuts. I have a 13 month old that I feel gets ignored sometimes b.c my 3 yr old needs attention. Once he goes on a path towards a tantrum there'd nothing that can make him happy.
I see when he's in school it is better
He did qualify for the ESY program, but it ended early August. I guess that month really was tougher. I also have to remember he's been in school since 3 months on a routine. One month, since being born of course, is the longest he's gone without daycare or school. Hopefully in time it'll get better.

Totally normal. You might want to consider enrolling him in a special needs camp like the pp mentioned. They have many of them at local Ys. They are specifically designed to take over when the ESY programs end. You can send him even for just a couple of hours a day or a full day, they're not cheap but it's helpful to maintain the structure. If not that then some sort of organized activity for kids with special needs. I know you're in jersey like me, but I don't think we're close otherwise I recommend some great summer programs for you. I would start with your local Ys. Maybe check some out now when he goes back to school. Hang in there!

Re: I feel like he's getting worse.

I am having the same problem with DS. The last 3 weeks of summer were terrible with behavior. He is having a very difficult time with his new school. He has hit the teacher for 3 straight days, and he tried to bite her. He was never aggressive before, and I cry everyday because I don't know what to do. I am glad to hear it will get better. I hope it is sooner rather than later.
