Nurses office

My 1st grader yesterday was in the cafeteria and started to gag causing her to throw up. She said it was due to the smell in the cafeteria. She said she went to the nurses (2xs) and she told the nurse that daddy was home and could pick her up and the nurse said no that she was OK. What is common protocol for this? My dh was home so he could have definitely got her and if she was gagging or throwing up etc...I would have liked to make the decision if she should stay or not.

On a side note: DD recently has been gagging/slightly spitting up due to smells. Not sure where this is coming from. She has some sensory issues where it could be stemming from. All of which they wouldnt have known anyhow. DD doesnt want to go back to the cafeteria anymore bc of the smell. Not sure how to handle that either? Thoughts?

In our school the nurse usually makes a judgement call about calling home when there is no fever, vomiting or clear medical issue. I know that our elementary nurse does call me if either of the boys make a 2nd trip down to the nurses office for the same reason in a single day. Just to keep me in the loop and ask how I would like to proceed. They've also called me after a single trip sometimes (after the child has been returned to the class) to let me know X was down there but was sent back to class. I don't think she is REQUIRED to do either of those things though.

I think the nurse likely felt that the gagging was psychological and potentially connected to it being the first week of school, rather than being a true issue. I do think she should have called you though. Your daughter wasn't just gagging.. she vomited. I think I would be upset if my kid vomited and nobody called to let me know. Even if it wasn't a true medical issue, having a child vomit from nerves or smells or any reason (in my opinion) deserves a call home!

I don't think it would hurt to call the school and let them know that you would appreciate a call anytime your daughter goes to the nurse.

Our nurse calls and asks you to pick them up if they vomit. That would have annoyed me if they didn't call.

As far as the cafeteria & smells, contact your school psychologist or principal. Maybe they've dealt with other kids who had a similar reaction or can move her to another area of the cafeteria.

She threw up correct? For me, I was taught if the child threw up they go home. I guess each school has a different policy. I would still like a call home. As the teacher I would ask the nurse if she did call.
You mentioned sensory issues so I would definately getting a meeting with the school psychologist and teacher.
Is your daughter in 1st grade?
