Recently Excessed NYC Teacher
This past Friday I found out I was excessed from my school after 8 years of service. My principal was trying to save my job but due to more budget cuts and lack of student enrollment there was nothing she could do. She was also hoping that the the art teacher who is taking over my 2nd grade class would retire or asked to be excessed instead. This is an unfortunate situation and I am trying to make the best of it. The hardest part is packing up my classroom after being there for over 7 years. I really thought my job was safe this year and I was told I was.
I was wondering if anyone knows of any schools that are hiring? and Can provide me with any information about what happens when you become excessed?
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Recently Excessed NYC Teacher
Let me first so that I feel for you! It's a really crappy situation to be in. I too was excessed in June of 2011 after teaching in the same school for 10 years. Thankfully my excess only lasted from Sept 2011-Dec 2011. At that point HR contacted me for an interview because a teacher decided to retire. I was in District 30 in Queens and this position was in District 28. Needless to say, I ended up LOVING it and am now back there this year as a permanent teacher. What you need to do is register on the excessed staff teacher selection site and search for jobs daily.
What District are you coming from?
Good luck and feel free to ask me anything!

Re: Recently Excessed NYC Teacher
Thanks for all your help. I have registered on the excessed staff teacher selection site and have applied to schools already. So at least I know I am heading in the right direction.
I currently teach in Queens, District 29.
I was wondering if you're able to apply for positions outside of your district?
Are schools a little hesitant to hire you if you come from a different district?
Last question...
If I secure a job is it only for this school year and in June could I possibly be excessed again?

Yes, you can apply for schools anywhere. They shouldn't be hesitant to hire you, no.
Unfortunately yes, you can be excessed again. But...if you like the school and they like you then you pray for the best!!
Good luck!
