WWYD?

My favorite co-worker is out having surgery. She works for a team of 4 including one senior manager. She will be out for at least 2 weeks.

I usually back her up when she's out.

Her last day was yesterday. She didn't do any hand off to me.

All of her managers have asked me for help.

Sure..

Throw her under the bus? Just suck it up and assist her team of 4 in addition to my boss (who is the head of the dept?)

I realize that I can indeed make this a big deal. I don't have to. But I want to in a way.

Trying to remain professional.

eta: she is officially on short term disability.

eta: she hasn't worked a full week in all of september with follow up doctor appts. I'm also truly annoyed that I had to work on the jewish holidays because she took off in addition to her 11 medical appts in Sept. I also rescheduled my own medical appt because she wasn't going to be in. grr...

Yah.

If she's out on medical disability, then in theory it's a real issue. It's not like she's just slacking off if she is having surgery, etc.

As someone who went out on 6 weeks of medical disability unexpectedly, it sucks from both sides. I wanted to help, but wasn't legally allowed to. Then you start thinking that your job is on the line because you aren't around.

IMO, everyone in the department should have a general clue and be able to pick up for someone else. Even if you dont have weeks of notice. From your post, it sounds like you knew she was going to be out? If so, why didn't you ask her at 4PM what was going on if she didnt hand things over to you? If I know I'm going to be or someone on my team is going to be out, I book a meeting on their last day to go over open items.

Yeah, it sucks you had to reschedule your dr appt, but IMO those types of things happen. I needed my coworker's help and leniency when I was recovering, and was appreciative of them. I have no problem doing the same for them.

She rescheduled her surgery many times. Once because there was an office party and she didn't want to miss it. But that got postponed. Ready for this. Yesterday she didn't have surgery. Her doctor messed up with scheduling or something so now it's postponed 2 weeks. Her surgery has been rescheduled a total of 3 times.

She said she would be in today and took a day off anyway.

She decided to start checking on her fertility in the same month she is dealing with her medical issues thus a true 11 doctor appts happened aside from the two that were related to the surgery. Then she took off for the jewish holidays. I rescheduled my own medical procedure and came in for the jewish holidays because of her schedule. I moved my shit due to her ever changing schedule and her lack of responsibility to her colleagues. Yeah, Susan will do it.

I asked her at 4pm if there's any thing I should know. She said she made sure the next two weeks were all set and she handed me a lunch order for the next day for one of her managers. The lunch never came because she never fully processed it and didn't get it approved. I had to scramble for a 50 person lunch yesterday at 12:05. Her manager was annoyed. I didn't throw her under the bus, instead I suggested that maybe it was a computer glitch in the ordering system.

I've been out on disability. I hired a temp. If I couldn't do that I prepped my cover completely. She had access to everything and knew exactly what was up. It's not my responsibility to ask to be prepped to cover her. It's hers.

Total BS. I have no choice to suck it up so that's what I will do. She's an idiot and I'm questioning whether this is an opportunity to make her glaring mistakes an example. I usually take the high road. I'm sure that has kept me employed over the years to an extent.

I'm at the point where I don't care.

Re: WWYD?

I think unfortunately you need to suck it up, but IMHO, this is how companies lose good people.

I have noticed a similar dynamic at my work sometimes.

We have a couple people who whine and piss and moan every time they need to do something that everyone has to once in awhile, that's annoying.

Or, like your "friend" they will totally fluck it up completely.

At times, I suspect my boss has just given the task to another one of our GOOD workers in order to avoid going around and around with these types.

While I obviously have no proof, this particular worker has recently become very distant lately, and "all business", in and out of the office quickly.

I would be willing to bet they are looking for a new job because they know what exactly is going on.

It sucks, unless you expect an eventual promotion out of it, which is what I am hoping is the case for you and this particular person at my job.

Re: WWYD?

I shall see what happens. So far, what I expect is that her team is actually getting support whereas she picks and chooses what she is in the mood to do.

Re: WWYD?

She took the week off anyway because she wasn't feeling well.

So now her surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday and then she will be out for 2 weeks.

I just found this out. I'm her back up and she never told me.

I told her manager that this was not cool and I should have known. If I'm to back her up I need her to communicate when she is out.

I told her the same. Ridiculous.

I wouldn't just suck it up but I also wouldn't make a huge deal out of it - maybe something like, oh well I am am sure with the stress of things it slipped her mind, but she didn't hand off anything. I would want to do some CYA so it doesn't come back to bite me.

I had emergency surgery a couple years ago (left early for a drs appt one afternoon, was in the hospital the next day). I still made sure that my office knew about things that were immediately pressing and had the info to cover my court dates, etc. That's what you are supposed to do, especially if you know ahead of time that you will be out.
