Over-enrolling self-contained classes?

DS is in a 12:1:1 3 year old 2.5 hour class. Right now there are 11 kids, and the teacher said they plan to put 3 more in the class, for a total of 14 (she said they are allowed to go 2 over). At 14 there will be the same amount of kids as currently in the integrated class.

Thoughts? I feel like I should complain--the 12:1:1 is for kids who need more attention, and to overenroll is kind of defeating the purpose, right? Do other schools do this, too? Chat Icon

I don't want to be the parent that Chat Icon, but I also don't think it's fair to overenroll the class.Chat Icon

The other schools do it too, but they should probably be adding at least one more aide to the class to help if they are overenrolling by 2. Did they mention that?

I always tried to think of it as I would hate to be that one parent who couldn't get her kid into the class, and if not for that extra one or two, I might be the one whose kid didn't have a spot.

There may be kids with their own one on one, check into that. I personally don't see 2 more being a big deal. My dc class added two more and I see it as more of a social opportunity. If it's too much the teacher can request to have another aide.

Re: Over-enrolling self-contained classes?

I would ask the teacher how she feels .
I worked in NYC in an elementary school for years...we were always over our cap and it did affect everything. Teachers were never happy about it nor do they always have the power to get extra help. Everything is about saving $$$.

If this self contained class is doing well, two more kids may not make a difference. However, the point to self contained classes is that the children are in small class sizes so they are receiving individual attention. If you feel your ds is not receiving that type of attention (his IEP goals aren't really being addressed the way you would want)...you should definitely see who you could talk to.

A self contained class of 14 kids imo defeats the purpose if there are only 2 adults. Just like a pp mentioned there may be 1:1 aides and in that case it may be working out.

Re: Over-enrolling self-contained classes?

over enrollment is very common and even if its the same amount as the inclusion class, by law they can and they will. its money from the state..

with that said, they will usually throw in an extra aid

i like how they can make the classes larger with over enrollment...

Are 1:1 aides counted in the number of aides in the room? There is only one 1:1 aide, and the child cannot walk so needs that 1:1 attention (so the aide isn't helping anyone other than the assigned child).

They haven't added additional aides yet, though they often have student teachers putting in time.

In the preschool where I work, classes are often over enrolled with a variance. We consistently have classes that are supposedly 6:1:1 with 7 children and two aides/paras/assistants. The extra adult is always one of the children's 1:1. In our case, we don't have children with physical disabilities, and our 1:1s are there mainly for behavior management for the most out-of-control kids. We sometimes have 8 children with two 1:1s in the class.

Re: Over-enrolling self-contained classes?

No, the 1:1 aides aren't counted in the ratio. So I guess it is as if the one child who has a 1:1 is subtracted from the ratio. So, if your DC is in a 12:1:1, take out the kid with the 1:1 and then there are only 11 in there, so if they add 2 more, there will be 13 so to speak.

Re: Over-enrolling self-contained classes?

I teach in D75 and what I was told is that they can go over the ratio by one student with a variance. We have one 6:1:1 with 7 kids. Even if the other kids have 1:1 paras, it should only be one over the ratio, and yes, I would complain. If they were able to be a room with more than 12 kids in it, then they wouldn't be in that setting, KWIM?

Also, 1:1 paras are not counted in the ratio, but the kid is. So if you have 6 kids, and 2 of them have 1:1 paras, then the class is still full. At least that is my understanding of it.

Re: Over-enrolling self-contained classes?

The school can apply to the state for a variance to increase the number of students in the class. If granted, they can increase the students. Hopefully they will increase the aides as well. It stinks!
