I would say something along the lines of how would it make you feel if someone said you are ugly because you have blue eyes. I bet it would make you feel badly right? That is why we don't say X is fat. It might be true, but just because something is true. If it is mean we don't want to make them feel badly.

I always told my kids that people come in all shapes, sizes and colors, and that they shouldn't point out what is different about someone because it's the person inside that matters.

I would do the same. DD starting asking me why people have different skin tones and I told her just this.
