Need Advice

My nephew is autistic, and he is in tutor time right now in daycare. His therapists suggested that he should go into a special school because he isn't getting the help he needs at a daycare. They suggested ACDS for him which is in plainview, my nephew just turned 2. With all these accidents involving buses lately my sister is a wreck thinking of putting a 2 year old on a bus, the school is 19 miles each way.

I know no one can tell my sister what to do but she keeps asking me and my mom what to do.

Re: Need Advice

What Tutor Time does he go to?

Depending on where he goes to TT, maybe there is a closer school?

DDI in Huntington
DDI in Ronkonkoma
Building Blocks in Commack

I didn't put my DS on the bus until pre-k age (he was 3.5 at the time).

How many hours of ABA is he receiving? I would tell your sister too look into a special school closer to home if she is concerned about the bus. Some schools also have before and after care if she wanted to do drop off (provided it is close to home).

P.S. My son just turned 3 and is on the bus. I wont lie. I worry. (especially with our previous incident). But he loves the bus and we wakes up every morning asking to go..."I go on the school bus today mommmy? Please, please, please?????"

Re: Need Advice

unfortunately the only schools that are 9-3pm are no where near where she lives, Little village, Variety, and ACDS.

He is getting services at tutor time, but the reality is, if he is stimming or playing alone in the corner the employees just will leave him be cause he isn't bothering anyone.

His therapists feel he needs to be socialized.
I just know this is going to be a tough decision putting a 2 year old on a bus. Chat Icon

Re: Need Advice

First, he would need to be approved for a special ed class by his EI service coordinator. Then, he has to get accepted into a program at one of the schools. Finding a full day placement, especially at 2 y.o. will not be easy. Things may have changed since I looked at preschools, but I think ACDS only has half day programs for children under 4. I was told a couple of years ago that their full day programs started at 4.

I was in that situation. My DS started at 2 in a half day program. So he went to daycare from 9-12ish, the bus picked him up at daycare and then went to school from 1-3:30 at his special needs school. Then, he was bussed back to daycare for afterschool. I was very nervous about the bus, but he liked riding the bus and didn't really have any problems with it. He got ABA 4 days a week at daycare too, so it was sort of the best of both worlds, where the ABA therapists could work with him in a setting with typical kids. I loved our daycare and they did a wonderful job with our son, but depending on a child's needs, a daycare may not be equipped to handle an autistic child.

Does he already have a diagnosis? If so, has no one suggested a special needs preschool before now?

He was getting in home services since he was diagnosed at 1 year old. He then was put into daycare, and the services continued, I am pretty sure he was getting about 30 hours of therapy a week, if not more at the peak.
The problem with the half day special ed programs is Tutor Time does not allow bus pickup/dropoff, so my sister would have to find another daycare.

My sister toured the school, and it looks like he is approved and could be in there in as little time as one month from now from 9-3pm.
I know this will be hard putting him on the bus at 2 years old. I know no one can make this choice for her.

He has a diagnosis from a clinical psychologist.

Re: Need Advice

I would tell her not to refuse the school placement only because of the bus. It's a little scary, because they are so young, and they can't tell you things, but IMO, he will benefit so much from a full day program in a special needs school that it will be worth it.

Thank you for the advice, my sister has decided to enroll him in the full day program. He starts right away at ACDS.

Its so hard for her to do this, but they said their goal is to get him mainstreamed for kindergarten.

Re: Need Advice

What a rough predicament to be in.

It's hard, but I think we often have to remind ourselves that horrible things can happen even if our DC is with us or our family.

You just never know.

99.9% of the time, these bad things that we see on the news are NOT going to happen to us though.

She is making the right choice. My son was in a full day program and on the bus at 3,and it was hard at first, but it was best for him.

Just wanted to jump in here. I work at ACDS and wanted to let you know that we do have several full day programs for children under 4 now. This only started in the last year or two though, so your information was correct at the time you heard it! Just wanted to update you. Chat Icon

Need Advice

There are pros and cons to every difficult decision. The pros are extensive for a full day program. I'm glad your nephew will be receiving the help he needs to succeed.
