plane with a larger dog (in cargo/baggage)

i'm moving to amsterdam for 8 months starting in march, and we are taking our dog with us. she is about 60 pounds and will definitely not be able to be on the plane with us. has anyone taken a dog in baggage before?

i'm sort of freaking out. my dog is extremely sensitive, hasn't been in a crate since she was under 1 year old (that was over 3 years ago), is rarely alone, and generally doesn't go more than 6 or so hours without peeing on the floor. so basically, i can't really imagine a worse situation than being in a crate in the cargo area of a plane for 8-10 hours.

please share your experiences! thank you!

To be completely honest, I wouldn't do it. I would rather have my dog stay with a family member or friend and know that he is safe, than to put him in cargo on a plane for 8-10 hours.

this was my first thought

i'd be nervous but i also don't think i could be away from them for 8 months--tough call.

there is no way to check on them while in flight? what kind of dog is it? if it is a short nose dog --i def. wouldn't
good luck w/your decision--i know it's got to be hard

Emily, ask your vet about a sedative to give the pup while under the plane. It isn't an ideal situation but I would rather bring Ozzie with me than leave him home for 8 months so I totally understand.

Re: plane with a larger dog (in cargo/baggage)

I don't have a dog, but I do have two cats that I moved from Australia to Germany. It took about 2 days. They were held one day before they flew (our choice) and then took a 22 hour flight.

We got a pet moving company to do it for us. They were fantastic! I would suggest maybe doing this, so that all paperwork is taken care of. When we went to pick up our cats from the airport, we saw another guy who was picking up his dog. He didn't have all his paperwork done correctly, so he couldn't pick up his dog. He had to send him back at his own expense. So check the paperwork and stamps etc.

We had to buy airline approved crates. We left them out a week before we left so they could get used to them. I slept in old shirts and didn't wash them. I then put them in the crate so they had my scent. The cats were pretty messy when we picked them up and it took a few baths and days to get them to smell better.

As for sedatives, it was suggested that they not take them. You don't know what the reaction will be up in the air.

Hope that helps! Good luck in Amsterdam! If y ou are ever in Frankfurt, feel free to GTG.
