New Year 2013

Hi everyone. I have joined this board because I want to lose 30 lbs in 12 weeks. I know it is possible because I am finally motivated and determined. Only problem is I'm on a budget and can't join anything so it's basically making a diet menu and exercising 45 minutes at home. Did anyone do this and was successful? Any advice or menu plan would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Re: New Year 2013

I want to lose 30lbs ,but by Oct, so I started counting calories (using My Fitness Pal ) and incorporated 30mins of exercise and in only 8 days I've already lost almost 5lbs.

I've tried to cut out sugar, caffeine , fried anything (all the things I LOVED before) and the difference is amazing already!

Re: New Year 2013

Losing 30 pounds in 12 weeks is a very lofty goal. I would suggest a lower carbohydrate diet. Keep track of everything you are eating for a few days to get an idea of your calorie and food intake. A program like fitday.com or myfitnesspal can help you do this easily and they are both free. These programs will both estimate your daily calorie intake to be very low if you enter your weight loss goal. It is generally recommended to avoid restricting your calories to less than 1500/day.
I would suggest eating 4-6 small meals a day. Plan your meals ahead of time and always have a healthy meal choice easily available to avoid high calorie snacking. Generally a protein and carbohydrate should be eaten together at each meal to help you feel fuller longer. Increasing your water and fiber (increase fiber slowly or it could lead to tummy troubles) intake will also help you to feel full. Try to avoid packaged diet foods, protein bars, diet drinks/soda- all of these things are full of sugar and processed ingredients.
The best approach to exercise is to combine cardio and strength training. Bodyrocktv.com has great free workouts you can do at home. I like skinnytaste.com, cleaneatingmag.com and pintrest for recipes.
Good Luck!

Re: New Year 2013

I suggest joining MyFitnessPal and trying Couch to 5K. Both of those have been life-changing for me. 30 pounds in 12 weeks is quite a lot. It's doable, but I would suggest aiming for more like 1 pound per week, which will not only allow you to lose the weight fairly quickly without depriving yourself, but will also save your metabolism for when you go back to maintenance. If you cut your calories too much now, you will not only have less energy and be constantly hungry (and more likely to binge), you will also lower your metabolism and have more trouble maintaining your new weight.

I think you mean 1200 calories a day. For a typical person who burns 1700-1900 calories a day with normal activity, no exercise, a 1200 cal diet would mean burning an excess of 500 cal a day, which is 3500 cal a week, which is 1 lb, 2 if you are more active.

I definitely agree with reducing carbs and sugars and increasing protein intake.

No, I meant 1500 calories a day. 1200 calories is considered a very low intake. It is recommended to try to lose 0.5-2 lbs a week.
