Fmla/maternity question
I've been getting conflicting info about this and hope someone has been in the same situation and can clarify for me....
I'm due June 24. If I have maternity for 6-8 weeks that would occur during our time off in the summer. If I wanted to extend and take the 12 weeks for FMLA would that be added on to my 8 weeks maternity or could I start the 12 weeks when we go back in September?
Also, can we use borrowed time to cover the days used for FMLA?

Re: Fmla/maternity question
it's different district to district.
DD was born at the end of August. My FMLA/sick time didn't start until the first day of school. It was only a week difference, but I still got the full time - I don't think many districts do that.
If you start your leave in June, that might change things though. DS was born 6/22 I went back the second week of school.

Re: Fmla/maternity question
Sorry I'm in NYC. I'm going to try to make into the very last day if possible! I'm thinking if I don't have Togo out at all on maternity then maybe I can get the full 12 weeks starting in September

Re: Fmla/maternity question
from what I know as far as my friends in nyc have told me is that they will not let you use your sick days with fmla at that time. (they only let you use your sick days for 6 weeks following the birth)
fmla just holds your job and insurance for 12 weeks. so you should be able to use it starting in sept for child care but will be unpaid.
again this is hearsay from friends in nyc

Child care and fmla are two different things - FYI
You really should go to the workshop :)

Re: Fmla/maternity question
Is fmla 12 additional weeks or 6 weeks from your maternity and then 6 weeks additional?

This is my understanding from a maternity leave seminar I went to. If you deliver before the end of the school year (lets say 3 days before) Your 12 weeks might be shortened by three days. The 12 weeks is for when the school is in session. I found the UFT maternity workshop very helpful and they will tell you what your situation will work out to be.

I'm aware of that but I'm getting different explanations and my payroll sec has no clue. Just asking for prior experience here since they won't schedule the workshop until its close to my due date and I'd like to plan things out

Re: Fmla/maternity question
Payroll sec are notorious for not being up to date with this info so always double check with hr and the uft with what they say.
