READY books
My DD is in 4th grade in a NYC school. Her teacher found this book. It sounds like its a ELA and math test prep book however she says its aligned with the CCLS requirements. The whole class has to agree to purchase this $30 book Paid by parents or else she can't purchase them. I don't believe in test prep this young. She is saying it can be used for independent work and other assignments. Is this just so the school and she gets a good score??

Re: READY books
You may not believe in test prep this young but it's 4th grade and they must take a very important Ela and math exam. Whether its this book or worksheets or some other book your child will get test prep All city schools test prep. You can thank our lovely mayor for placing so much emphasis on test scores
Is it just so schools can get good scores? Probably but again all schools do this. I have just never heard of asking the parents to buy a special book

Re: READY books
We use them. They are excellent. It is worth the $30.
And it's not so much so the school gets a good score but so your daughter does. The test is important and you want her to do the best she can.

Re: READY books
Test prep is critical to your child doing well on the NYS exams. They are making the tests increasingly more difficult and rigorous. I don't see how a child can go into the test blind not knowing what to expect. Test prep is a must! Unfortunately, student scores are heavily looked upon, making teachers and schools held accountable for student growth and performance. There is pressure on everyone to do well.

Re: READY books
I am surprised they are expecting you to pay for it. But I do think the preparation is neccessary. The tests are going to be very challenging this year with the new standards. And each child's promotion will depend on those test grades. We are using similar books to prepare in my 3rd grade class (NYC school).

Re: READY books
I was not expecting to pay for text books this young. The teacher said that if all parents do not say yes to purchasing them then she can't get them. When I told my dd I don't think I will do it she started saying no I have to! She feels the pressure. I don't want to deny nor do i want to be the o only parent saying no so I finally said ok.

READY books
In NYC it is not surprising that you are being asked to pay. I knwo my school doesn't have them in the budget. Unfortunately, my school is also a low income area and I couldn't ask the parents to buy them. If I want them, I'd have to purchase them and at $30/book that is impossible. :(

Re: READY books
My DD is n 3rd grade in a NYC school and they are using the NY Ready books, which is all test prep. We did not have to buy them, $30 seems like a lot!
I chose not to send her to the Saturday morning class they were pressuring for, but we do practice the Ready books over the weekend as per her teacher's request.

Ok this is completely out of control. Once the books came in they are getting 9 pages in the book per night on top of the other HW she gets. Yes, she is in a G&T class but I don't care how advanced they go in the class, she is not eating or sleeping properly because she has so much work and pressure. It isn't the G&T it's the testing!! UGH!!! She is 9!
