Yes, it was a second career for me and after 3 years (and having DD), I went back to my original career (CPA). I have found being a CPA much more mommy-friendly than teaching.
Teaching was not at all what I expected it to be - it was about 10% teaching and 90% admin.

My husband is - he has given it four years, all of the hair on his head, and about fifteen pounds. He's done. We had to sell our home after his most recent lay-off, along with 60+ other teachers in that district. Same district closed two schools. We also put off having children for two years. Not to mention that it isn't about teaching anymore, and isn't about him teaching the joys of science, bio, and chemistry - but more about teaching reading in everything you do and dealing with administration who have no idea what they are doing. And even if you manage to walk the tight-rope of all of the above, work your butt off, stay every single night until 7pm, coach two sports, volunteer after school to do just about anything and everything - you still get laid off b/c of budget cuts.
He is subbing now, getting by, if he gets a FT position (HA!) between now and the fall, then God bless us, we will be so thankful... but, he took several police exams and is on the list to be called for quite a few and we are just waiting that out. Whenever that happens, and the police call, no matter what position he is - he's going to law enforcement. He will one day, happily, return to teaching at either the police academy or college after he retires from police work.
That's the plan. What a shame, the students are the one who will really miss out on DH's motivation, drive, love of the subject, and dedication. But, we are starting a family, we have bills, and it's just what we have to do to survive.

I am not a teacher, but my DH WAS. I just want to let you know that not everyone is against you. I recognize, even before common core, that you work harder than a lot of professions I know. That you work work work once you get home, grading, lesson plans and dealing with politics. My DH loved it YEARS ago but got tired of the politics in the recent years and decided to leave what he thought would be/should be his dream job. He is very successful in his new field but more importantly, he is FAR less stressed, INFINITELY happier and has much more time to spend with us.
I am sorry for you guys and for what teaching has become and wish you the best in the next steps in your career! You are the hardest workers I know and I appreciate you and think you deserve every penny you make!
