What type of eggs do you buy?
I'm looking for the healthiest, most humane type of eggs.
So what type of eggs do you buy, and where do you buy them?

What type of eggs do you buy?
I either buy pete and gerry's cage free eggs, egglands best cage free eggs (these are both at stop n shop) or if I am at target they have a cage free egg I think it's archer farms (their brand)
. I try to find ones that are also DHA and organic if I can. But mostly I try to do cage free.

Pastured eggs are the best eggs. The chickens roam freely and eat bugs, worms, etc. Much higher in nutrients, omega 3's, etc. Unfortunately, the terms "cage free" and "organic" dont mean much when it comes to eggs.
Check eat wild.com for places/farms in your area that sell pastured eggs.

There are a few farmers at the Union Square Greenmarket that carry eggs. I try to get them there.

I buy either Vital Farms available at Whole Foods ( because the company gets such a high rating on Cornucopia) or I buy from my local farmer's market.
ETA: Vital Farms eggs are pastured according to their website.

I agree and pastured eggs taste AMAZING! You won't regret paying a bit more for them.

We go through a ton of eggs. I buy Kirkland organic eggs from Costco. In the summer I get fresh eggs from the farmstand by me.

Organic brown eggs.
My mom raises chickens too so sometimes we get them but a few died this year so she doesnt have as many to go around.

I have to disagree. Local, organic, pastured eggs are absolutely different than factory farm eggs. The pastured chicken has a different diet ( no GMO feed and they eat a natural diet of bugs/ grass), no antibiotics, no exposure to pesticides and no hormones. Even basic organic is better than factory farm because of the absence of gmo feed, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics. Also, the treatment is a bit better than on a conventional farm. ( though not nearly as good as a small, local farm)

What you are ensuring in an "organic egg" is that the feed is organic (ie. Non-gmo, no pesticides, etc). Chickens are not allowed to be given hormones per the FDA regs.

I completely agree with you regarding the living conditions on standard organic egg farms. ( ie debeaking, very limited outdoor access, crowding etc) I was speaking to 1. the superiority of local, pastured eggs to factory farm eggs
2. the superiority of more standard organic eggs as compared to factory farm ( because of the lack of antibiotics, gmo feed etc)
Also, I know hormones are banned in meat chickens. Are they banned in egg laying chickens too? For some reason, I thought they weren't.

I wasn't talking about pastured.
Cage free chickens still live in disgusting conditions.
