Vegetarian fed meats means that they are fed corn, right?

So even though the trader joe's ground beef that I bought claims that it is all natural, was given no growth hormones, no added preservatives, minimally processed-(what does that mean anyway?) the cow was probably fed corn, so it's gmo?

Yes, it was probably fed corn and the corn was likely gmo unless otherwise stated.

Yes. However, if labeled "organic" then the feed is not gmo.

Your best bet to avoid grain fed animals is to buy grass fed beef, or pastured pork/poultry.

Grass fed all the way.

You want grassfed/grass finished. Otherwise they are finished on grain to fatten them up and you don't get all the benefits of grassfed their entire lives.

I get my grass fed meat at whole foods, fairway, and Costco. Once and a while I can find a steak at stop and shop that is grass fed, but their selection is very minimal.

I think I vaugley remember seeing this on Oprah maybe? About it needing to say grass finished. Where do you find grass finished meats & poultry?

What about eggs though? All I see is vegetarian fed labeling on eggs.

For those that but grass fed chicken for example, how much do you usually spend?

I have a 1.57lb package of bell & evans chicken for $5.17 - veg fed :(, no added hormones, no growth stimulates, no artificial ing, minimally processed - don't know what that means? I'm curious too see what the price difference would be.

No such thing for chickens. Chickens are generally grained fed.

Which Costco? I shop there weekly and they only have organic ground beef.

"pastured" chicken and pork is kind of hard find. Contact your local Weston a. Price chapter leader to see where you can find pastured poultry/pork. There is a co op in my area that buys pastured pork and chicken from Amish country. The cost of a whole fryer is 5/lb.

"pastured" chicken and pigs roam on farmland freely and eat bugs, worms, nuts, etc. They are not fed grains like soy.

Whole foods sells 90/10 grass fed ground beef for about 7.99/lb. if your local grocer sells grass fed beef, you can contact the beef company directly and ask if their cattle are ever fed grains.

expensive & thank goodness, we don't eat ground beef that much right now but that will change once my boys get bigger, I'm sure.

As far as chicken, if the package says they are organic, even though they were veg fed, at least I can assume it's not gmo, I guess?

lcherian, thanks for the info on chapters. I'll have to look into it more another time.

Many people will buy a side of cow for much cheaper and store the cuts in the deep freezer.

That's what we just did. We ordered 1/4 of a grassfed cow from Kezialain Farm . It was around $5.00/lb for 125lbs of individually vacuum sealed packages of different cuts. So worth it!
