menu feedback for ds' birthday please
I have it narrowed down to a garden salad, chicken francaise, marinated steak BUT need to still pick a pasta & sides. I will have 1 person who is vegan so I'm trying to think of her. She also eats like a bird.
I think I am leaning towards the penne & broccoli or pasta primavera (both are just pasta in garlic & oil plus either the broccoli or mixed veggies) and sides being Sweet Potato & Red Potatoes -is that too much potato?- There will be tons of veggies served already with the salad & possibly the pasta.
Options for pasta are: baked ziti penne alla vodka penne & broccoli pasta primavera
Options for sides are: Rice pilaf Mixed Garden Veggies Mashed Potatoes Sweet Potato with marshmallow topping Red Roasted potatoes Carrots & peas

I think your menu looks great so far.
When is the party?
I am wondering if some of the sides (like mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with marshmallow topping, etc.) are too heavy for the spring/warmer weather. They seem more like winter or holiday side dishes to me.
Also, I would limit it to two starches. I was thinking that if you have pasta as the main side, along with the meat options, salad, and veggies, you could maybe nix potatoes and/or rice. I would maybe do 2 kinds of pasta dishes -- 1 vegan (the pasta primavera or with broccoli and oil) and 1 non-vegan but likely to appeal to the broader crowd (like penne vodka or baked ziti). I'd probably do a larger tray of the latter, given my usual crowd.
If you want to do a potato side, I would maybe do something more spring-y, like a potato salad in a vinaigrette, or even roasted potato wedges.
You can even just add dinner rolls as a side, in case someone just wants to make a steak sandwich or have a roll on the side of their meal... or even garlic bread!
Another good starchy side I make in spring and summer is Barefoot Contessa's Orzo with Roasted Vegetables. She includes feta cheese, but you can omit it to make it vegan. That can be served at room temp, to make it easier. Maybe you can make the vegan pasta dish more of a pasta salad type thing, and then make the other pasta dish a hot dish.

oh yes, good point since it will be in the summer. These options are actually the only thing I have to work with because I am having it at a restaurant so I can't do 2 pastas :(

For sides, mixed veggies and one potato or rice. FYI, the mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes won't be vegan, but if your friend is having pasta and eats like a bird, she probably will be more than happy with pasta, salad and mixed veggies anyway)

OH, I didn't realize this was at a restaurant.
Then I would pick a pasta that works for your vegan friend IF you think the rest of your guests will like it.
And then I would probably do the roasted potatoes and mixed veggies.
But if I were you, I would probably pick something that would appeal to the most people, like the penne vodka, for the pasta, and ask the restaurant if they can make a special plate of vegan pasta for your friend. That way you don't have to revolve the menu choices around her.
Another advantage of doing that is you can make sure that the meal she is served is really vegan. The restaurant may use butter or chicken broth or something like that to prepare even the vegetarian pasta dishes. So even if you decide to choose a veggie based pasta as the pasta choice for everyone, I would talk to the restaurant to make sure it's prepared vegan. You don't want to make a choice based on your friend and then find out it's not vegan (or she asks and finds out and doesn't eat it anyway!).
But the choices sound really good! Hope it's a great party.
