Pet Insurance
The lady at the animal shelter recommended we get pet insurance for our new puppy. Any thoughts? What does it cover, etc.?

Re: Pet Insurance
We have VPI and it's great. You can chose your level of coverage...from almost everything to lesser plans. Check out their website. Well worth it should your pet need to see a vet often of God forbid need major surgery or something- it gets expensive so fast!
ETA- our plan also covers yearly well visits and shots!

Re: Pet Insurance
I didn't have it for my last dog and ended up paying a fortune (2 cruciate surgeries, leg amputation, diabetes) so I swore I would get it with my next dog!
Now we have Trupanion. Like the previous poster stated, you can choose which benefits you want and you set your deductible. We pay $41.93 and have a $350 deductible, our payments are a little higher each month because we opted to have coverage for hip dysplasia.
The plan does not cover routine pet care, it only covers if your pet becomes sick, needs surgery etc.
Right now we've been lucky and haven't had any sickness/injuries with Milo :knocks wood: but insurance would have definitely saved me money with our last dog, Pico.

Re: Pet Insurance
My mom also has Trupanion, the same plan as the poster above. Her dog hasn't needed it yet so it's hard so say how it is.
I don't have one for my dog because he's already 9 and it the costs would outweigh the benefits. If I got one I would get VPI pet though since we get a slight discount on it through HR.

Pet Insurance
We had it through the ASPCA. We had an 200 dedutible and coverage for anything but well visits and shots.
We cancelled it because our dog hasn't been sick....I am sure we might regret that decision one day. My sister has it for her 2 pure breed dogs that have tons of skin issues and allergies and its worth it.

Re: Pet Insurance
My sister has VPI for her dog too. The dog once ate a pack of gum (the sugar free kind that is bad for dogs) and it just about paid for his hospital stay. So worth it in my opinion.

I just got a quote for $30/month ($360 year) which includes wellness visits, vaccinations and flea/heartworm. How much, on average, are wellcare visits and how often do they go?

We just paid 305 for our dogs yearly well visit with needed shots a skin test and another test and some meds.
So if that's just for we'll visits and no sick accident coverage no it's not worth it.

I have Trupanion for my dog. They are a great company--They pay 90% of the bill for injury and illness after you pay your deductible.

I have VPI for Shammy. Last summer he was in the hospital for 3 days and it paid for everything except food and the bath they gave him before he came home. Totally worth it!
ETA- We have full coverage including yearly shots and wellness visits.

Same for us, for one of our cats. (One cat is 'mine' from prior to us getting together, the other two are 'his' that he rescued while we were dating). My cat is prone to UTIs and I got VPI on him very early after two vet visits due to UTIs. I just felt like this - I was young when I found him (21) and I didn't want money to be a factor in my ability to get him the best possible care, should anything major happen.
Have had VPI for 10+ years and have always been extremely happy with their service.
The other two cats - I left that up to DH in terms of whether he wanted to do VPI with them. He opted not to; if god forbid something happens, he will just pay for the procedures and visits out of pocket.

I cancelled mine a month before my dog tore her ACL. I think it is 1000% worth it. It would have saved us almost 5,000 because the surgery would have been covered. If you have a big dog, or a dog thats prone to injury than yes! YES! DO IT!
