not looking to start drama but feral cat help please

I live in Holbrook and my oh so fabulous neighbor who does not believe in throwing out garbage (she keeps it in piles and burns it-whole other issue)....now has a mother cat with about 4-5 babies...so cute by the way. the babies are getting around well so I would think they are a few weeks old. how can I get them help? I want to help but being I have two kids under 2, I really don't have the time or the means to devote to these kittens. I called around and they told me to catch them but then I would have to hold on to them, get them neutered and deflead then adopt them out myself. they are eating.

Once the kittens are old enough, you could do a trap, spay, release/return programs. Basically, you could have the cats spayed/neutered for a low cost, and then release them back outside. This would prevent them from having more cats. http://www.islandrescue.net/ is one place that does that program (I believe).

I don't know if a rescue group/shelter would be able to help as they are ferals...I'd say they are safer outside than in a shelter. They will probably be put down at a shelter.

Other than that...I mean I don't know what else could be done. That's where they live.

ETA: I don't mean "That's where they live" in a snarky way BTW. I just mean there are so many feral cats, that the only "help" you might be able to give is to let them live out their lives there.

thank you for your advice. my only concern is where am I going to keep these kittens? the places I called said I have to keep them indoors for few days after they are fixed. I have nowhere to keep them away from my kids.

I did not try Island Rescue yet but I will first thing in the am. We do not have a shed or a garage. shed is being delivered at the end of July. They are currently seeking shelter in crazy lady's shed/outhouse. Unfortunately I heard the mom cat screaming and another cat that resembles two of the babies, chasing her. According to a vet I called, the mom is probably in heat again Chat Icon

I'm thinking that a shed in the middle of the summer would not work well. You could probably purchase an outdoor cat house though. That might be helpful...at least the kittens would have a contained area to be in. They will generally have to be about five months old before they can be spayed and neutered.

If the mother is done nursing, she can be spayed as far as I know.

she is still nursing them. I spoke to the neighbor in my backyard. She rescued the last feral colony years ago, years before we bought our house. We are trying to work together to find a solution. She has a garage and may be willing to keep them there if we get them fixed. Fingers crossed!

Wish you lots of luck with this!!! If you Google, Long Island cat rescue groups, you *might* be able to find some assistance...but I'm not 100% sure. Rescue groups are amazing, but I don't know if they'd be able to help much with stray cats when so many house cats are looking for homes...but it couldn't hurt to try...as long as it's not a shelter.

I think your best bet is to call a rescue and ask for help. Good luck.

Hopefully you can get a rescue involved to take this over. If not I hope you and your neighbor can catch and deal with them. Hopefully you can spay, tame and re-home or release them... but you have to do it now because they will turn wild quickly if you are looking to re-home them.

When we bought our house we had several feral cats (probably around 10 cats) but they quickly disappeared. I think my idiot neighbor was hunting them in the woods across the street from our house. He hated them, they peed and pooped all over his lawn and stoop.

Maybe you can find a dog run for cheap on craigs list... put it in the shade or throw a tarp over it and some sort of shelter inside for a little while? Maybe you and the neighbor can go in on it...
