I am looking on the open market now. I have gotten some calls/emails from it, but I also am emailing my resume/cover letter to principals and I'm getting more calls and interviews through that.
I'd do both.

I got a job at my current school through open market. When I was looking I had several interviews as well as job offers. I didn't do anything other than apply through the website.

Same here. But you could always send a resume to a random school that you'd like to work in. You never know where a vacancy will pop up.

Not always. Sometimes the last name is shortened and sometimes there is a number at the end. You can look up emails in the directory in your mail.
