What do 60+ women do for exercise?
My mother is in her early 60s and does not exercise. She never really did in the past but menopause took a toll on her weight and I'm starting to worry about her. She has bad arthritis in her knees and says she can't do much. I have done research and exercise is essential for arthritis, but she is still stubborn.
I want to come up with ideas that are good for older aged women. She says no treadmill. She works full-time in the Seaford area so any classes would need to be before work or after.
I just need ideas for her. I've suggested yoga. Can anyone share what their mother/aunt/etc does for exercise?

My mom is almsot 70 and she takes Zumba, Yoga, Water aerobics, weight training, plays tennis, pickle ball (whatever that is) anw walks all over her community.
She lives in FL so all of this is through her community but she is doing soemthing everyday.

Re: What do 60+ women do for exercise?
My mom attended some exercise classes geared for 60+ but didn't like them much. She just turned 70, my Dad will be 75 and they both play golf on a regular basis.
She plays 9 holes with her girlfriends and then they go out to lunch in their cute golf clothes and hats.
She's also tried riding the bike but needed to get a very large cushiony seat. Also it has to be one of those bikes that you can sit up straight in with tires designed for pavement.

Walking and/or treadmill.
My MIL tried hot yoga with me but didn't stick to it because she felt like she was wasting money, sitting out most of the time in a hot room.
I see this sign for "Silver Sneakers" at the gym I go to. Don't know anything about it though except I believe it's a program for older people.

My mom will not do anything physical, but I do have e few "older" friends who are physically active. They do:
* water aerobics * golf * walking * running * dancing * swimming

My mom is going on 69 and has never been one bit athletic.
She has been going to curves - 20-40 minutes at a time. She's been really happy.
She also walks with her GF
I plan to still run and golf at that age.

My mom goes to Curves 3-4 times a week. After my (her) dog passed away in February, she continued walking around her neighborhood without him... people still stop her and ask about him. :(
My dad does water aerobics at the VA and does really well with it. He has a TON of health problems but he actually enjoys this. She probably couldn't do the VA program but I'm sure there are places to go--maybe the local Y?

Do you know how much Curve is per month? I found one new my mom and want to gift her a membership but of course they won't tell me costs unless I come in!

Which VA? Northport? I wonder if my dad would like that?
I'll ask my mom how much her Curves is per month.
Walking is great. My dad is 78 and walks 3 miles every day.

Re: What do 60+ women do for exercise?
Personally, I'd be wary about one of those Curves places. A lot of them do not seem to stay in business very long, and they seem to have really odd hours, like only open until 2PM each day.
I remember seeing a sign at my gym (Big Al's) that they do gift cards.
That may be a better investment. They have monthly plans for as low as $10 a month (doesn't include classes) and $19.99 which includes unlimited group exercise.
