Kids and sports ? What do you think
I had ds in soccer last year, I went to sign him up this fall and he doesn't want to play. I feel that he should play a sport and I want to push him. He doesn't have a good reason, being sort of lazy.
Dh feels we should leave him alone. I feel like he has to play something, team work and being active is Very important.
Wwyd? Should I try a different sport ( he will be 5 in a few months)? Just leave it be?
Any suggestions besides soccer? He is not in any activities starting September.

There are lots of other sports, maybe if you can try a sports clinic at the YMCA and see what he clicks with. Karate, lacrosse, basketball, swimming are just some of the sports.
Regarding soccer, Maybe he just didn't like the coach? know that at 4 - our town's soccer program is still developmental and some kids get bored with the drills but the next year up (age 5) is acutal games and more exciting for them.

He loved the coaches, they were really sweet. I am not sure why he doesn't want to play, I can't help but be disappointed! Thanks for the suggestion, I will check out the y near us

Re: Kids and sports ? What do you think
Maybe check out US sports institute or something similar. They offer multi squirts programs. A program like that will give him the chance to try 5 or so different sports. The one we did was one week long and one sport a day. They did soccer, baseball, basketball, lacross and hockey. It is a chance to sample different things and find one he liked. Maybe try soccer one time, baseball another etc to switch it up when you get him in something so that he has some variety.
Maybe he would like something like tennis, swimming, karate instead?

JMHO, I think 4 is very young. Maybe he just doesn't like soccer. I would try offering some other sports or activities.

Agreed. I wouldn't force him into a sport he doesn't like - it would be torture for both of you. They are so many options out there.
Is he starting K in September? I had to pull DD out of karate when she started K. It absolutely wiped her out the first few month.

Re: Kids and sports ? What do you think
My son hated soccer at 3 and 4 (we'd only do fall not spring because it was miserable to watch!). He is now on 2 travel teams at age 8 and it is his favorite sport. So you never know. Every kid is different and their tastes evolve as they get older. I think 4 is too young for them to decide.
We are very into sports and wanting our kids to try a bunch and play something every season. I think sportsmanship and teamwork are great lessons and keep kids active (esp as they get older and bored of just regular playing)! My older son hates everything he tries at first. If I gave up every time he said he didn't like something - he wouldn't do anything. He loves sports now and plays a bunch of them.
Look around for sports classes that do mutli sports - maybe he'd take a liking to one of them. Or karate? swim?

I wouldn't push him. Some kids just don't like sports.

Re: Kids and sports ? What do you think
I would find a different sport or activity. Last year DS had swimming classes in the fall, ice skating in the winter, and baseball in the spring. On the weekends he had religion classes. I am not sure what activity to choose this year, but I am going to ask him for his input. He will continue with hebrew school this year as well.
