Subbing..

I am finishing my masters in ESL with a certification in Special Education. I did my undergrad work in childhood ed and am certified to teach 1-6 grade. I have not worked in the classroom besides working as a preschool teacher since graduating undergrad. I have two young children and think I need to consider subbing to get classroom experience as well as open doors to potential jobs, as well as to earn my hours for certification.

Has anyone else with a young family done this? Did you get enough days/money to pay a sitter that it was worth it? I need to work because of the student loans I have racked up getting my education as well has helping with household expenses so I am currently working part time in a Dr's office.

Thank you in advance..any advice is appreciated!Chat Icon

Subbing..

I've been a permanent sub for the good part of 5 and a half years. I work every day. I have a two year old. I'm not going to lie, the money is horrible. I'm able to do it because we only pay for part-time daycare. I'm actually looking to get out of teaching because I'd like a house and another baby, and I can't wait around for a classroom.

You may have better luck because of your certifications. I love the district I work in (particularly the school I work in). They have a great special ed program and although I'm not special ed certified I have gained a ton of experience in ABA. They also hire special ed support staff. They get paid like substitutes but the work is every day and you are working with the same students each day.

Feel free to FM me if you have any questions, I've worked as a sub in four districts and would be happy to answer any other specific questions if you need! Good luck!

I sub, but we don't pay for childcare. If we had to, it wouldn't be worth it, IMO.
