Looking for job as RN
Hello,
Putting feelers out everywhere that I can. I am mid suffolk, if anyone knows of any RN jobs for a new grad, please let me know. I LOVE my job now (in Research Compliance), but really want to venture in to my new career. Tough market right now!

Do you have a BSN or an ASN?
Just curious because a number of places are not really hiring ASNs unless you work there already. If you really want a hospital but cannot get called for an interview, I would work as a CNA for 3-6 months while applying and then re-apply. I know NSLIJ ALWAYS promotes from within!!

I heard working as a CNA with your RN license puts your RN license at risk. It is a very tough market.

I have worked at a couple and they are always looking for nurses.

I would try them all.
I'm hesitant to recommend where I worked previously because I know most of the nurses were really stressed out there. A lot of it tied into how the agency was run ;).

Associates..that's WHY it's so tough. I wouldn't work as CNA because of the liability, it's really not recommended. Would have been smart to do BEFORE I graduated, but I also could not take the pay cut at the time. Will be signing it for my BSN soon..nothing more I can do.

This is true, don't do it. If you were a nursing student then I would advise you getting your foot in the door as a CNA, but not if you are already licensed.

New grad nursing jobs are tough anyway, without a BSN its even harder. The only thing you can do is keep applying everywhere, and sign up ASAP for a BSN program. If you have on your resume that you are enrolled in a BSN program it may help. Many of these programs can be done online since they are only theory classes.
I'm not saying you are like this, but there are a lot of new grads out there who complain that they can't find a job but at the same time they aren't willing to work nights/weekends/holidays/med-surg, etc.
It's a different market now than when I graduated, nowadays you have to take whatever you can get to get that hospital experience. After a year in med/surg or whatever job you land, you can probably transfer to the specialty you want if an opening is available.

Is it easier to land a job as a per diem? I recently was hired for a job through the LIJ/NS system and a lot of the people at my table for orientation were per diem nurses.
I am sure this sucks if you need benefits, but I would imagine it may be a good in to the system if you are good.
I also agree with you about the expectations new grads in general want.
I have someone who is volunteering with me right now who has no experience, yet, is always talking about wanting to be an administrator in a hospital "to make money" and not wanting to start "entry level".
I constantly have to bite my tongue. It's a fantasy though which is why I don't get into it with them.

You have to have experience to work per diem because the per diem nurse just fills in the schedule where needed and is supposed to hit the ground running so to speak, the same with agency and travel nursing. Often times there is no real orientation, just hospital orientation and then one or two shifts on the floor, that's it.
You don't necessarily need the one year of med/surg to work a specialty if they are willing to hire new grads. I would send out applications, resumes and cover letters to pretty much any full time hospital nursing position there is, its the hospital experience that counts more than the specialty. If you have friends working as nurses, see if there are any jobs that aren't posted on the public job board for a particular hospital, many times they are not.
If you don't have BLS, defintiely take that, also take ACLS if you have the money for it. Stay on the lookout for nurisng job fairs, there are usually several in the LI area.

Thanks for clarifying about the per diem role.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
To the OP: My vent was not directed towards you; just directed to a lot of people I see wanting to get into healthcare.
(I'm a social worker so obviously work with a variety of disciplines).
It's tough too because so many programs are being cut, employers also don't have a lot of time to supervise anymore, so want people who can hit the ground running, and who often can wear a variety of hats so to speak.
I definitely can see it from both sides though.......often when you get someone who has been in the field for awhile, their view is often clouded and they come in with a lot of negativity/expectations too.

I know visiting nurse service of new york used to take new grads, they may still. If the hospital thing doesn't work out you can always apply to visiting nurse agencies, they will train you.
Apply to every hospital job you can find, there were a few jobs at St Charles and NS/LIJ that did not specify experience was needed. I think the NS job says you have to enroll in a BSN program within 24 months of hire and complete in 5 years as a condition of employment. I would enroll asap anyway.
This "nursing shortage" is no more. There are tons of people graduating from nursing school where there are no jobs to be found, its even tough for experienced nurses. Its a shame because we really do need more nurses, the hospitals just don't want to pay for adequate staffing.

Thinking I prob. should have picked a different career, HA! Man.. I am getting too old to keep switching.

I think I would just keep looking for a full time job. I personally think its important to have consistency and full time hours to help transition from student to licensed nurse. As a per diem sometimes you are floated all over a facility which makes it difficult to learn a routine and to learn the basics since each floor will have a different culture and way of doing things.
The other thing is, its not always easy to transition to full time when hired as a per diem. They may let you work full time hours, but you won't be entitled to the benefits or other things that a full time job will. If you have a job already, I would just stay where you are until a full time hospital job becomes available. Keep sending resumes out and filling out applications. Ask classmates to talk to their managers and see if there are any jobs available that aren't posted on the careers website.

This would be a great opportunity! I would bet that the patient acuity is high and you would really learn a lot taking this type of position.

I think NSLIJ have similar programs for new grads, sort of like an internship.
