Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
Currently - my DS is in a private preschool and he LOVES it. I love it, too - the attention, the overall sense of caring that everyone (teachers and directors) has regarding my son and his well-being... I was just wondering if those in Universal Pre-K feel the same. We were thinking of applying for UPK next year - when my son if 4 - but wouldn't oppose to keeping him at the preschool he is in now if some feel the quality of care isn't there.
Any insight? We are in the Longwood district if that helps any....

Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
We did UPK and it was terrible. It was at a center that was contracted through the district. 5 days a week, 2.5 hours, and I honestly felt she learned nothing she didn't already know. The teacher wasn't warm, and the assistant was just a witch with a B. If my child was academically behind, I would have pulled her out, but she did have fun and I thought of it as social hour. I put no educational value on it though. With that said, our district now offers a program AT the elementary school, run by the school teachers. Not an outside facility. I hear that it's fantastic. So in short, I would ask the people in your district their opinion on their specific program. They are all run differently.

Re: Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
We did UPK last year the HHH district. Chloe had a positive experience. Hermteachers were great, she got to know the school, prior to entering kindergarten, and she also new lots of kids when she begn Kindergarten on Monday. She went to UPK to UPK in the am and the she went to her private nursery school in the afternoon. It saved us 6,000 for her to do UPK.. She received great care and education.

Re: Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
My cousin's son and a friends's son have both done upk in Longwood...both at NIS and were very pleased. One is a teacher and felt her child was challenged and given a good background for starting kindergarten.
On a personal level, my girls went to private preschool and then upk, and I felt that they were comparable to each other. Both has certified teachers and formal curriculums.

My son went to NIS for pre-school years ago (as a special needs child in their self contained class), and we had a great experience there. Loved the teachers and staff.

I currently have my son in a UPK. prog that happens to be in our Catholic school! He LOVES it and I LOVE IT!! He comes out so excited talks about all he did in the 2.5 hrs ! For the (non) price I couldn't be any happier! It is really like he goes to the catholic school without the price tag

Re: Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
My DD is in Bay Shore UPK. Although it's been a rough week with drop offs, the program seems great!! She has 18 kids in her class, 6 per table. There is a teacher with her masters degree and 8 years experience as well as a teachers assistant. It's 5 days a week for 2 1/2 hours. They rotate around different learning centers, get to go outsides and have snack time.

Re: Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
DS did UPK in Half Hollow Hills. It was fantastic- the teacher was warm and wonderful and the academics were stronger than the private school he went to in the am. ( he did pm UPK) Another great thing about it was the UPK was in the elementary school he would attend for K- the familiarity with the building was great in facilitating his transition- he was already comfortable and happy at the school.

I'm not sure how true it is, someone mentioned if you have a gifted child it might not be a good fit.

Re: Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
It isn't Longwood, but my DS' private preschool is a UPK provider. The classes seem to be doing the same exact curriculum.

Re: Private Preschool vs Universal Pre K
We did UPK. They are all different. Our program happened to be great, but another program in our district was run/taught awfully.
