What if you took out from your 401K just before everything went south - maybe mid to end of 2007, bought a house when the DOW was down around 6000 and housing prices were a steal and then stuck it all back into your 401K in 2011-2012. That would have been excellent planning and it would have been VERY smart to pull money out of a 401K.
Yes, yes, just trying to rattle your boat a little.
It's been documented that 50% off 401k borrowers tend to be repeat offenders. They feel it's a means for getting quick cash and they get "comfortable" doing this (funny how the word comfortable is coming back into play in this thread).
So maybe one time they make a dumb move to find out they got lucky that the market had a temporary dip. The same person will make plenty of other poor 401k moves and get burned in the end.
There is no rattling the boat here. Unfortunately the better phase to use is "you can't fix stupid."

Seriously, can you ever just stop flapping your gums? No one really gives a shit about your so called expertise because you inevitably just come off as a pompous ass. If it makes you feel good to spout your knowledge to make people feel bad then you should really get a new hobby because this is getting old.
And I agree...you can't fix stupid, arrogant posters who enjoy belittling others on an internet chat board.

I have to say, I enjoy reading Ave's post. I find them intelligent and informative to be honest. I think it's an important conversation to be had and I think experience does matter when it comes to a topic such as finances.

And I would agree, but he takes a pompous, holier than thou attitude where he insists that he's always got the best answer, and that has rubbed people the wrong way.

I don't personally see it that way. I think when it comes to finances, many people only want to hear what they want to hear when it comes to spending. I think Ave does know more than most posters when it comes to finances and anything he says may sound condescending but it's based on a more extensive knowledge.

As do I. Some people here have trouble reading the truth. Im not sure how some posters take ave's posts so personally and are offended. Why is it so hard to comprehend that taking money out of a 401K and sticking it in a low interest savings account is just a financially short-sighted decision in the current economic climate?? I dont see any snark or 'attitude' in her posts at all.., also I guess I am not privy to Older posts but ave is a guy?? I had no idea.

Downpayment for House
Informative yes. But it's all in the delivery. And that goes for everyone in general IMO.

ITA. And he always seems to appear when he can "school" someone on a topic that he is just oh so knowledgeable about.

Of course he would just appear for certain topics. He is someone who clearly has a valuable amount of knowledge replying to a TOPIC that someone is asking for info on.
I don't think it's fair to say Ave is appearing for "Drama" as many other posters do, with nothing valuable to add to a discussion.

I think Ave is a dude. And I really do like reading Ave's posts. I see him/her, whoever, as a wealth of knowledge on topics that involve $.

Apparently many do as I routinely get FMs with questions and I always try to help people out. But thanks the vote of confidence.

I don't personally see it that way. I think when it comes to finances, many people only want to hear what they want to hear when it comes to spending.
Thanks for the comments. The bold is actually the motto of lifamilies in general... which is the #1 reason why I love posting here.
And please, with the amount of nasty drama threads that this site produces (that I don't even bother with), let's refrain from bringing up the pot & kettle argument.
ETA: good example... what other website is going to produce a pissing war between the catholic and jewish religions.

You are far from a drama seeker. I think that's a reach. It's called posting when you have info to add.
