So lets say your wearing a one shoulder dress...
And formal side ponytail "updo", so to speak.
What side do you wear the ponytail on? The sleeve side or the non-sleeve side?

Hmmm... I asked google since they know everything. It seems people do it both ways, but I'm all about symmetry. I'd say on the bare shoulder, unless you have side swept bangs. Then that kinda dictates which shoulder is going to be covered regardless.
