Possible to get back into teaching?

My DH LOVES teaching, and it got away from him a few years ago.

He has a good job now in sales, but really would be so much happier teaching. It's been about 6 years since he last taught.

I know he needs to finish his Masters, but would he have to do student teaching again. Is this going to be an impossible task for him when he still needs to work full time?

I so want to support him in this endeavor.

Re: Possible to get back into teaching?

If he has permanent certification, no he wouldn't have to student teach again.

If his wasn't permanent, he should call his local BOCES office for the status of his certification and find out what he has to do.

If he does have to student teach again, he'll have to do minimum one semester. I went back to school while in a business career and I had to quit my full time job when I started student teaching.

That's what I was afraid of..no way can he get on the unemployed train again. I feel terrible about that.

Re: Possible to get back into teaching?

Can you apply for the NYC Teaching Fellows if you have a background in education already? Maybe that would be another option so at least he could bring home some form of pay.

Re: Possible to get back into teaching?

I'm pretty sure you specifically cannot get into TF with a background in education.

Unfortunately if he really can't be unemployed teaching might not be the best field for him right now. If you do some searching on this board you'll get an idea of what the market is like; there are people who have been subbing for literally years while they search for jobs. It's bad out there.

I know, that is how he wound up out of the field to begin with. Neither of us has a career in our chosen profession, what can ya do?

Re: Possible to get back into teaching?

Can he do something teaching-related for his current field?

Maybe that would help.

I am in social work, but do field instruction for social work students, which is very much like teaching.

I also run a day program and a lot of my activities I do with my clients are similar to what a teacher does. In fact, most of my clients call me "their teacher". Chat Icon

IMO I wouldn't do it! I've been trying to find a teaching job for five years! It's extremely depressing for me to say the least...

That's a good point. He may enjoy doing something that is between the two areas--like training new sales people or something like that.
