Done!

Just done with this career. Looking for other opportunities.

Any ideas about what's out there for us?

I hear ya. I'm so sad about what is happening. I shake my head. We are in a WONDERFUL school and everyone is sooooo unhappy. Even our principal and ap are overwhelmed and frustrated. I feel like my class is not even remotely getting the education they deserve and I am CAPABLE of giving them. They deserve better.

Re: Done!

I agree..... My Facebook status had 4 teachers today posting about looking for a new line of work. It is such a shame.... Stuck in a profession I don't recognize anymore.

I'm not sure...what frustrates me is that no one seems to know or speak up about the lack of materials, poorly created "curriculum" (not standards per se), and demoralization not only of teachers but for kids as well...I wish I knew of other options

Well just throwing it out there. But Macy's corporate office positios pay very well. I just applied for a copy writer position. $75K a year. I love teachign and I'm so sad that I'm even considering leaving but I can't go on like this.

Re: Done!

I would recommend looking into a private school. I work at a private school and absolutely love my job. I know nothing about common core, don't have to do any assessments or portfolios, when I read about "Danielson", I have no idea what anyone is talking about. I teach and I love it. I plan lessons, I help my students learn, and I don't have to worry about the politics of it.
My salary is comparable to that of a public school teacher (if anything, slightly lower, but not drastically).

H,

I never heard of a private school salary being almost comparable to public school. Where are you?

I work in a yeshiva. I looked into catholic schools but starting salary was only 20-30k. My schedule is a little different (I work longer days 3x/week but half days every friday) and our vacation schedules are very different as well. I used to work in a long island public SD but left to take this job- it was only about a 5k pay cut and it was probably the best decision I've ever made in my career.

Re: Done!

Private school is different from catholic schools. And all catholic schools in nyc are following the common core. They do not have to worry about danielson though
