DOE English Teachers

Today my departement was told that we should not be teaching literature in our English classes anymore. Instead Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men etc should just be supplemental material in thematic units. Thematic units made up of non fiction articles and resources that we can search for on "Google" with a few short stories thrown in. In fact if we don't ever teach another novel or play in its entirety that is perfectly fine.

I teach high school and am wondering if we are alone in this or is it across the city?

All our teachers are horrified and a few are ready to quit at this point.

I have never taught for the DOE, but I taught high school English for 11years (and once I'm done with this SAHM gig, will again Chat Icon ) and I am SO sad to hear this. So sad.

This is a disgusting misinterpretation of the common core. Sounds like your administrators are doing exactly what they are not supposed to do.

We have printed article after article and given it to them but it makes no difference. They are drinking the kool-aid that the network is feeding them and won't listen to anything we say. Chat Icon It is devastating.

Are the parents aware that this is the direction your curriculum is going to take? Sometimes their voices are heard when ours are not.

Re: DOE English Teachers

This is my interpretation of it. Yes, there is not an emphasis on literature any more. However, you can still use literature but you have to pair it with some non-fiction. So, for example, if you were reading Of Mice and Men, you could read articles on mental health during the depression.

Have you checked out the ENGAGENY website? There is 1 complete module for ELA 9. You can check out what is there.

In addition, check out this link from the state regarding texts:

text list

Click on the second link (not the first link). You can see the text selections for each of the modules.

Feel free to fm me.

I hate this. That's the way my school has been for the past few years. Just non fiction. So sad.

Re: DOE English Teachers

The instructional shift is that a student would be exposed to 60% non-fiction across the day and 40% fiction. That doesn't mean that there has to be no fiction.

It really depends on how the administration interprets the shift. The shift applies to all subject areas not just ELA.
