Homework Incentive Help!

I'm taking over a third grade class soon. I've been in this building 5 years, this is my third leave here, so the teacher I'm taking over for said whatever I want to adjust is up to me.

One of the things she's concerned about is homework being turned in. Since the beginning of the school year the kids have had 1 day of 100% homework (as in everyone brought it in completed). She has tried having them spell out "celebration," adding a letter for each 100% day and once they complete the word they get a party. The lone C has been up there a month.

It's pretty much a math sheet and reading comp, so it's not the volume they are getting each night.

Anyone do any kind of individual incentives?

Thanks!

Homework Incentive Help!

(I teach H.S so take what I say with a grain of salt!)

Is it the same kids that have been missing homework? If you could narrow it down, you could call the parents to introduce yourself as the new teacher stepping in and stress the importance of homework.
I teach high school and even at that level, when my students aren't completing their homework I get the parents involved right away.

I remember when I was in third grade it was always my mom that would ask me if I had homework, made sure I sat at the kitchen table, and checked it when I was finished. Although the children do have a responsibility, I feel like it is also on the parents at that age.

For incentives, with my middle schoolers I used a star chart for behavior. By the end of the week, if they earned enough stars they got a prize (candy, extra points on the test, free hw pass, etc.)

Thanks for responding! It is the same kids missing. Parents have been contacted, notes home, etc. It's hard because we're trying to teach them to be responsible for their work, but they're still only 8 and 9, so without parents checking up on them it's hard. Conferences are coming up so I can address it even further then, but I'm thinking maybe a little individual incentive might motivate them a bit more.

Token economy system? Every night you do he you get a "dollar"? DH calls his magic money, my school they are Basie bucks. It will teach them money management and can be redeemed for prizes/treats according to the menu you set.

One year I used Homeworkopoly with great success. I had a class who, as a whole, just refused to do homework. This motivated them. You can print it off online.

I'm doing this now and it's working pretty well! They play on Fridays.
