Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
I am trying to figure out if it is worth the aggravation. We can likely get into our new home as early as the week of christmas...but the holidays are big for us...especially with a 4 y/o. Logistically, I see this as a nightmare. I equally feel the same about trying to do it before the new year. Can someone explain the tax benefit to closing before January 1st? Money wise we would have to pay our rent for January (they will not prorate it). Which might be a blessing as we'd then have a whole month to paint and decorate the new house. DH thinks blowing a months rent is silly and we should "suck" it up. I think holidays are stressful enough without being in the midst of a move. What say you wise ones?!?

Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
I can't say I'm "wise" lol but I can share that we are moving my mom right now and it's stressful! If you could hold off, you may want to especially with a 4 yrs old .
My mom had a lot of help and professional moves and it's still overwhelming , I don't know if it is because of emotional portion of it, but the timing is something to think about.
Good luck in your new home !

Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
I moved on New Year's Day into our last apt. Wasn't bad.
When we bought our house we closed between Xmas and New Years and started work on it New Year's Day and moved feb 1st.
I didn't have issues with either.

Re: Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
We just went into contract on our new house and the sellers put a closing date of December 19. When we signed, we added a note that we would like to close the first week of January, and they agreed. I wanted nothing to do with moving and/or worrying about closing right before Christmas when so many people take vacation. This way, the holidays are over and we can focus on the house!

Re: Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
I would pay the extra month of rent for sure. I would have no interest in moving during the holidays.

Re: Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
We closed Dec 11th and my DH painted and we had carpet installed, blinds installed, new washer/dryer, etc. all done before we moved in over New Years Eve weekend.
I would pay the extra months rent and use your appt as storage and slowly move into your new house, especially if you want to paint and do some minor updates. It's a heck of a lot easier doing that when you don't have to move furniture and boxes.
Set up your Christmas tree where ever you will wake up Christmas morning. You could set it up in your apartment to keep things the same for your son, and also have some small decorations at your new home and a couple of presents from Santa there too.

Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
we moved from LI to CT less than a week before Christmas, DDs at the time were 14 months and almost 4.
We had a little tree and did a lot of the wrapping after the girls went to bed xmas eve. Decorating was still done, elf on a shelf even came with us.
In retrospect, I wish we had waited until after the holiday, but I think it's just moving in general that sucks.

Re: Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
We sold our house last year and closed on 12/28. I was adamant about having a real xmas for DD (she was turning 2), so still decorated, put up our tree, etc, and then took it all down 12/26. I'm not going to lie, it was a bit nutty but we made it happen. We had to move into our inlaws because we were still in contract on new house, not ready to close.
I would've stretched it out a little longer in January, but our buyers didn't want to have to pay rent come Jan 1.

Re: Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
I closed mid December and moved in New Year's Eve ?and was 9 months pregnant.) it wasn't terrible. The crappy thing was though we didn't put up much decorations because we were trying to pack everything up and couldn't see unpacking and packing extra stuff.

Re: Anyone Move Around the Holidays?
We closed on our house on 12/26 and I insisted on moving before 1/1 and honestly it was a big mistake. It made Christmas so much more stressful with trying to pack etc. If you could move in January I would recommend it!
