UPDATE!!! My 2nd 13.1
I know the forecast can change, but for next Saturday they are saying: 30% chance of rain thur, fri, sun BUT 60% chance of rain low 38 hi 58
I have never ran in the rain & I don't think my Hunter boots will do
So....what gear do you recommend & any words?!
Update: So today was my 1/2 marathon. My 2nd race ever, & all week my Christmas decorating kicked my butt (or shall I say back & hip!) but I iced & stretched, lived on my foam rollers, & ibruprophened prior.
The rain ended on my drive over, stayed around 45 degrees, overcast, & a little windy.
I decided to wear shorts & compression socks. But layered in a shortsleeve, warm long sleeve/turtle, & a jacket. I was perfect!
Had a time 1:50:29!!!!! Actuallly shaved 6 minutes off my 1/2 in Oct & finished 9th in my age out of 91!

Oh no....dress me for my 1/2
I would wear sneakers, shorts, short sleeve tee, and baseball cap if it was above 40. Below 40, I would have a long sleeve tee. I easily overheat on race days. I never find rain jackets all that helpful-you wind up wet in the end anyway.
Bring extra clothes to change into afterwards (shirt, socks, sneakers) and a towel to dry off/sit on for the ride home.

Ran my first half in the rain. You will be okay. I am always cold so all fall/winter races I wear long pants and no sleeve. Usually my under armour vest and something to cover my ears. Inalsomdo not use any rain gear.

Re: Oh no....dress me for my 1/2
My last few long morning runs (12 & 10) I've been in my pants (& compression socks) & long sleeve shirts. I guess we'll have to see the morning temps? If I decide to change to shorts & compression socks. I always wear a hat, so the visor should help if it's heavy at times.
So no rain coat? I saw one by Columbia that seems to have an adjustable waist, arms, & hood, & yet breathable)
No benefit to trying to stay dry?

It's not that there's no benefit to being dry it's just that you won't stay dry no matter what. The jacket will move around with you, water will be coming down at you but also up as people all around you will be kicking up water as they go. I find that water also gets inside the jacket from the neck area. Then you end up soaked and with an extra layer on and the wAter is almost trapped inside the coat of that makes any sense. I just don't like it.

Makes sense! I'm thinking I'll stick to my tights....cause I don't think I'll like the feel of wet nylon shorts stuck to me either.
I really hope it doesn't rain, I was so looking forward to my DDs & DH cheering for me. Maybe it'll be a light rain at least.

If it is raining before the race, you should try to stay dry before. Try plastic bags around your feet, and take them off just before the start. You can do the same thing with a garbage bag on top. You don't want to start wet and cold. Once you are running it won't be so bad. Good luck!

Re: Oh no....dress me for my 1/2
That's a good point about the starting dry....I'll plan to do that with bags. I guess once I start running I'm sweating anyway. Maybe it'll warm quicker, we're expecting to get to the low 50s....of course that's by afternoon.

Re: UPDATE!!! Oh no....dress me for my 1/2
Thank you! This was really was great & it's hard to believe I only started running longer distance (more than 5 or 6 miles) just this Spring.
I wasn't even tired after this one & actually felt I could have ran more when I finished (it's time to learn to challenge myself during the race more).
I'd love to add a marathon to my bucket list, but the idea of the time it entailes to add even more miles is holding me back. Maybe when both my DDs are in school?

Yeah, I hear you on the time constraints. I cannot imagine signing up for a marathon or an olympic or longer distance tri... I barely have time as it is! But as you say, maybe when both DC are older.... :)

Re: UPDATE!!! My 2nd 13.1
I have yet to really do any formal "speed work". I just enjoy going out & running what I can.
The only thing I did try to do between Oct & Dec was push harder the last mile or 2 every long run, so my legs even tired got used to pushing. I was sick for a few weeks & was skeptical of how the race was even going to go. Plus I strained my back & hip too.
I do know that I need to learn how much I can push my body during the race. I'm so afraid to go to fast too soon & hit a wall. Does that come with experience?
For 2014 I'd love to reach a 1:40....maybe I need to learn how to speed train LOL!
