It looks like I'll be closing on the 18th (woohoo!!!). i plan to take a few days to paint and do small things before i officially move in. how does it work with switching over the gas and electric? i would need it in the new house and old apartment. do they give a grace period or would i have to pay for both locations at the same time?

I would just bite the bullet and pay for the few extra days of utilities on both places - in all honesty you're only talking about a few dollars, especially if you aren't living there yet, you can keep the heat down low and won't have all of your appliances plugged in. I would recommend calling maybe on the 10th for both and telling them the closing date is the 18th. They need to send someone out to do readings on both before they can switch it, and I made the mistake of calling too late and I remember it was ALMOST an issue. You really don't want there to be any time with no services. Is your landlord taking over the utility costs after you move out?

You have to pay for both locations at the same time if you have utilities in both locations. I did this when I moved into my house and we had no problem. I spoke to Con Ed a couple of days before the closing date and explained what I needed.

If they are in your name for both places then you have to pay...the utility company doesn't care if you are not moving in the new place plus you will need heat and electricity to do work.

We carried utilities at both places until we moved. Except for Verizon - couldn't have it at the new house until we shut off our old place.
