Swimming for weight loss
I'm recovering from a stress injury on my knee. I've been gaining weight and am miserable about it. I am not a swimmer but am willing to learn. (I can swim but not "properly") Do you think it will help with weight loss? Any success stories? TIA!

Yes! I learned to swim at Eisenhower park at 30 years old. The workout is as intense as running, for me. When I get out of the pool, I feel skinnier that when I entered-- due to engagement of core. Try it! :)

Thanks for your response! Did you do laps or classes? I was looking at a gym that offered classes or a swim coach. Not having luck in the swim coach dept though.

Laps. When I started I did a learning to swim class at Eisenhower. Saf-t-swim is another place you could try, and I am sure there are private instructors. After you get comfortable swimming, you can join a master's swim team that has a coach. HTH!

Re: Swimming for weight loss
Absolutely. I swim as part of my triathlon training and I never realized what an amazing work out it is! In addition to regular swimming, there are aerobic classes at different places (The JCC, for example) in the pool that could be good for you with your knee. Obviously talking to the teacher would be helpful first but the relief of pressure from the water would be fantastic for you (I've looked into this for my mother who has bad arthritis in her knees).
I went to a swim class in Manhattan but I really think that if you can swim, even if its not "properly", you can do laps in a pool. I wouldn't worry about what you look like if you think you are swimming "wrong." And remember, you may be out of breathe the first time you do a lap (I was!) but if you slow down, make sure you are breathing correctly, you'll be swimming for an hour straight in no time.

Swimming for weight loss
I don't have much advice, but I can say that I swam for 30 minutes a day for most of my 3rd trimester when I was pregnant and couldn't do other types of exercise anymore. I seriously never felt better or more fit in my life. It's a perfect no impact exercise.

Re: Swimming for weight loss
Completely agree with others. I do laps in the morning as part of my cross training for running, and when I can in the evenings I also do an aqua class. Swimming has helped me tremendously with my knee pain.
The laps I started at 4 laps each and rest 30 seconds. I did this for 20 minutes. Now I'm up to 30 minutes swimming non-stop.

Re: Swimming for weight loss
I always heard swimming is good and when you're feeling stronger, you can try the elliptical machines because it is less strenuous on your leg joints.
