I imagine only if you are changing the square footage of the house.

Re: permit question when remodeling house
You'll most likely need some if you are moving plumbing and/or electrical. If you are just replacing old with new, and not moving any fixtures, you probably don't need any. Every town is different, though.

Only if you increase the square footage. I'm going through a renovation right now and have been through this several times.

Town Hall. There is a permit department for each town. It should be listed on the town website.
I'm doing renovations, and in the Town of Islip, you definitely need permits for any plumbing work, and any electrical work that's being moved. Adding square footage is a separate permit.
