3rd grade HW over vacation

Did your 3rd grader get HW? I'm not talking about just reading.

Is it fair or not?

DD got a huge packet it's not optional. It's finding evidence and critical thinking using a scholastic Storyworks magazine. She has about 10 sheets to do. Plus 6 math sheets. We have had an extremely busy weeks so far. I think it's unfair of the teachers to give this much. They asked that the child do a little everyday.

On the one hand I know it's good for her to do but on the other I feel like writing to the teachers saying she didn't have time.

As a teacher, I personally do not think it is right to give work over a vacation. I know some teachers do, and I understand the reasoning behind it to a point, but I don't believe in it. The kids need a break. That's why it's called a vacation.

My DS is in 2nd grade. He got homework, but much less then normal. They still have 11 words and sentences, they still have to read and record daily. And they had one math sheet. They normally have 2-3 math sections in their book as well.

Third graders take the state test. Test scores are now part of teacher evaluations, aren't they? I think kids need/deserve a break but I totally understand why they got so much work, there is a lot more pressure on everyone for the kids to do well.

That's exactly what it is. ELA and math prep. She did not get social studies or science. She didn't get anything "fun" or creative.

I feel bad for the teachers too.

So how do you feel about a parent writing a note saying "sorry my child did not get through all the work"?

3rd grade HW over vacation

My 6 th grader has some math sheets & reads over vacation. He is the type of student that needs constant reinforcement...this helps him stay on track

Re: 3rd grade HW over vacation

I teach third grade and didn't give any vacation HW. My own third grader also didn't have vacation HW.

My 5th grader has so much homework it could be considered child abuse. Chat Icon

3rd grade HW over vacation

I just had this conversation with DH today. He couldn't believe she did not get any homework over break and thinks she should have (DD is in 1st). Regardless though I still have her read every day even if its for 10 minutes and she has a few websites from school that she goes on daily to work on math and such. The websites are "fun" so she really doesn't think it's work lol.

To answer the other question, I have on many occasions wrote a note to the teacher and said there was too much homework for the night or if there was something I didn't think appropriate for her. I would have no issue writing a note as long as he did some of the homework.

ITA...( as a teacher)I get the point of it, but as a parent, I can't imagine having to sit and do homework. We've been crazy busy and today was the first day we haven't had stuff to do. I didn't give any assignments to my 4th graders....

My 3rd grader didn't have any work over the vacation. I did make him do some to earn gametime though ;).

As a teacher and a mom, I don't agree with it at all. I really wish we would let these kids be kids and enjoy a vacation the way many adults are able to.

I teach in a NYC school. We are required to give a math and ELA packet for all holiday breaks.

I am a former city teacher- and we were required to do the same for all vacations- they got ELA and math packets. It was not up to me- often the school or the district put it together.

3rd grade HW over vacation

I teach and I gave my 5th graders HW over break. They had a take home test for math and 2 essays for science. These were also given before break started so that they could begin working on it BEFORE vacation started.

Yes, kids need time to be kids, but with all that is expected now, it is difficult to NOT give them work to complete over breaks or weekends. Plus, doing a little bit each day helps keep the ideas fresh in their minds; which means they don't come back to school after break and not remember anything that we had been doing.

wow - that is nuts! That sounds like way too much. My 3rd grader did not get homework. Kids deserve a break! He has been reading like crazy so that is good enough for me.

Re: 3rd grade HW over vacation

I honestly didn't even think to check their folders to see if they work nor have they mentioned it. My 1st and 3rd graders have been reading during break just because it's something we encourage them to do consistently. A couple of times my 3rd grade has logged into a math website the teacher has them use.

I agree with kids needing a break, but I don't see nothing wrong with making them read daily and perhaps doing 4-5 worksheets over a two week break.
