Need your help

We eat in our dining room every day, so our kitchen table is pretty much useless. We occasionally use it as a serving surface for parties or holidays. We don't have room for an island in the middle of the kitchen, but we would love an island/unit with storage in it, maybe a wine rack, and ideally some sort of bar or overhang for two bar stools. All of the ones I'm finding have storage on one side, the overhang on the other. But that won't work for us. We need to have it against a wall so the overhang needs to be either in front or even off to the sides. If any one can help me find something, please let me know.

Re: Need your help

Having the overhang above where the unit opens up would make it difficult to get to the shelving.
You would have to really bend down and sort of duck underneath the overhang.

my MIL had the same situation. A useless kitchen table that was used only to serve things and as extra counter space. After Sandy, when she was redoing the kitchen, I told her she should just put have one built into the wall, a set of lower cabinets which are mounted to the wall about a foot ujp and then a counter top. She did and she loves it. It's bar height. She has no difficulty getting in and out of the cabinets, she uses them for stuff she rarely accesses.

Like the above poster mentioned, I wouldn't store every day items in it, more like their weird kitchen stuff you only use once in a while so I don't think it will be too much of a PITA. I would love to find something premade, but I'm starting to think I may have to get something custom.

Try looking at a regular cabinet and have a top made for it, like butcher block. You could even put casters on the bottom if you want it to be more mobile.

At one point I found a cabinet in the Ballard website that I wanted to put into my kitchen, but I went with built in lower units and counter top, making my kitchen a galley kitchen.

Re: Need your help

You could buy upper cabinets at HD or Lowes and put them on the floor since they aren't as deep as lower cabinets and then put a contertop on top of that- it should overhang and you can use stools.

Take a look at the container store- they had some interesting storage options- DH and I have a similar issue in our kitchen- I am still trying to figure out what to do.

I think you did Ikea cabinets, right? I would go back and see what accessories they have for wine, etc.

If 24" is to deep, you could do wall cabinets and put then on legs (it fits), but I'm not sure if the wine bottles would fit then.
