ferrets
Also put up on the Pets board, I need help, DH wants a ferret and I have zero knowledge on ferrets. If anyone can tell me of a place in Suffolk county that sells them and they are not mistreated I will take any info given. Also if anyine has info on how they are if left alone or with kids etc. TIA

Agreed. They will use litter just like a cat, but you need to clean it quite regularly. Also the ferret itself can be smelly due to the oils on the skin. They are adorably cute and great pets though, but like dogs, they need lots of attention and loving. They love to play.
Also you have to be careful with them. They will burrow under couch cushions (you don't want to sit on em) and love to find little nooks to sleep in. They will also steal and hide food and even jewelry if given a chance (which I thought was SO funnY)!
ETA: As someone mentioned on Pets, they will also nip at times. It is really jsut cause they want to play (they will nip ankles), but you need to be careful around small children (the one I used to have bit my cousin - who was TRAUMATIZED. He didn't break skin or anything, but I think my cousin's feelings were hurt more than anything!)
Also if you could, having 2 ferrets is great. They like to play and snuggle together. It is more work (cleaning), but I think it is in the ferret's best interest

Re: ferrets
Don't get one. Don't get one. Don't get one.
We had two. They are not as affectionate as most people think. They're biggest concern is what is new in the room & if they can burrow into something. This included mattresses, stereo speakers, etc.
They aren't good with children. They're small & often scare easy. To defend themselves, they nip. It doesn't hurt much for an adult (well - having your foot nipped isn't ideal), but any kid would be scared. We found that once we had a baby, they were left in the cage more & more. At one point I bought a 6ft cage out of guilt.
They are prone to adreneal cancer. Harriet (one of our ferrets) had to have one surgery. Edna had to have two of them. Each surgery was over $1k.
While I loved ours both & was heartbroken when they died, I would never recommend getting one.
If you do decide, please FM me & I could send you to some sites regarding buying one from one of the better places.

Re: ferrets
You can adopt ferrets just like any other pet - I would always try this before buying animals from a pet store. I did a search and found this place:

Re: ferrets
I had 2 and they were wonderful! But they dont live that long and I think it has something to do with the way they are bred. The ones you can get in the petstores are usually from Marshall Farms. You can tell because the ferret will have a tattoo on its ear. Marshall Farms has been found to do cruel research on animals, etc. I dont want to get into a whole big thing with that, if you want to do a google search on it, you can.
