Grandfather clocks - updated w/ question below

My DH knows someone that wants to give him a very old, beautiful grandfather clock. It would look nice in our dining room since its traditional but wondering if I will be making a mistake bringing it home. Are they loud, do they go off every hour? Are the sounds controllable?

Re: Grandfather clocks

My parents have one...it's been in my dad's family for a long time. With theirs, you have the option of turning off the chimes. It's beautiful, I love it.

Grandfather clocks

You can turn off the chimes, but honestly you get so used to it.

I would love one, they're so beautiful!

Grandfather clocks

We had one growing up. The first night we had it I complained to my parents that I heard it all night long. I never even noticed it after that. It just became part of the noise of the house.

Re: Grandfather clocks

We had one when I was growing up. It chimed every 15 minutes. It's true you notice it at first, but then it just becomes normal and you don't think twice. Your visitors will think the door is ringing which is always funny. But it is beautiful and will be passed down through my family for as long as it works.

Grandfather clocks

I have one passed down to me from my grandparents. I love it; They are beautiful. And you really just get used to the noise. I barely notice it anymore.

Re: Grandfather clocks - updated w/question

would you know approx. how much it costs to get tuned or oiled?

It is very hard finding a place that fixes them. They are beautiful but getting rare I guess in today's world.

ITA with everyone else. I grew up with one, you get so used to it, you never notice it anymore. In fact, I was just at my mom's tonight, and I have no recollection of hearing it!
