Going in for IUI#1 tomorrow.........

I guess I should have asked this on the phone when I spoke to the nurse but my head was in such a daze -- I didn't think my IUI would be tomorrow and they told me not to trigger because I am surging on my own.....

Do they do IUI's before ovulation, during ovulation, or immediately after ovulation? I've read all different things. It seems that its most common to do it slightly before ovulation since sperm has a longer life, they will be there "waiting" for the egg once it drops. Any truth to this? Not sure if it changes by practice, but I go to LIIVF and see Dr. Kenigsberg. Also, does a doctor perform the IUI procedure? I assume that there is a doctor each day who is just on IUI/IVF duty, and that it therefore may not be Dr. Kenigsberg who does my procedure. Ahhhh. Nervous/excited/holy crap -- is this happening?!?!

I just had the same thing as you. They monitored my blood, found I was surging on Monday, and scheduled IUI for Tuesday. Since it wasn't tightly controlled by an HCG shot, we just had to assume that Tuesday morning was "around the time of ovulation" - no way to know really if it was before, during, or after. I think the highest success rates happen when the IUI is a few hours after ovulation when the egg is sitting there, ready. You mentioned how with an IUI, sperm have a longer life - that's actually incorrect. Since they "wash" the sperm and they're not swimming in semen, they only live for 6 or 12 hours, when sperm from can live for 3 days or even longer, depending on a bunch of factors.

A doctor will do the IUI. A nurse will explain everything to you first and go over your DH's numbers. You'll sign some forms. At my practice, they try to get you your own doctor, but if that doctor is in surgery then you just take whoever is there. The whole procedure takes about 5 minutes and then you lie there with your feet up for another 10 minutes. It stings a little but it's not bad at all, and it's over fast.

At LIIVF with my IVF I had to sign something saying I understood my Dr. may not be performing my procedure. I think they alternate it. I am thinking it's the same for the IUI but I don't know for sure, I'm sure someone else on here can help answer that
