NYC DOE- Can you lose your tenure if.......
You switch to a job (in another DOE school) where you will be teaching under another certification?
For example:
You are a Social Studies teacher in a school (where you got your tenure). However, now you have the opportunity to work at another NYC school (where you would be so much happier for many reasons) but you would have to work under your other certification, let's say its ESL.
I thought in this scenario you just accept that you would lose seniority/drop in seniority bc now you are a new hire in a new building under another cert. but I've been told by two different people this past week that you would also lose your tenure??? Does anyone know about this sort of situation? TIA

You are tenured under your certification. So therefore you were tenured as a SS teacher, not ESL. So you will need to get tenure again under this certification but it should only take 2 years since you were already tenured. This is according to state law, but I know nyc makes up their own rules. I don't work in NYC for the record

Pretty sure both of the above are correct re tenure- but I believe you keep your system seniority. I know you are also given seniority within your building based on license too, but I also think you would have the option of switching to your other license. But unless your school is restructured early on you probably don't need to worry.

You definitely lose your tenure, and will have a shorter probationary period before you are eligible again. I also think you would lose your seniority, as its not tied to your years in the district/school system, but instead is based on your area of certification.

Thanks everyone. Now I just have to decide if the new job offer is worth losing my current tenure. 2 yrs doesn't seem that bad at all and it would be a happier environment for me. Decisions, decisions....

Getting tenure is a whole different ballpark than it used to be. Many teachers in my school have been denied and have to reapply with massive amounts of paperwork.

Yeah, I wouldn't give up tenure. To get tenure now you have to jump through many hoops with insane paperwork, and from what I've heard, principals are denying tenure left and right, even if all your work is amazing.
