Anyone have tips for when you reach a plateau?

I have been on a fitness journey for almost a year now - started as a couch potato and I now am at the Gym 6 days a week for 1-2 hours - I really do love it now (and I never thought that was possible)- I also have done a complete nutrition overhaul nothing but veggies lean proteins and fruits....My goal was not to just lose weight but improve overall health and in time be able to complete a marathon of some sort....but losing some weight is good too....I lost an initial 20 pounds and then stalled now I changed up my routine and diet a bit but the weightloss has still stalled a bit ....any advice on tricks to rev my metabolism - I would love to drop another 20 pounds.

You might need to add in food if you are working out that much.

Good for you with your success so far!

Curious about the time spent at the gym. What exactly are you doing for 1-2 hours? More Time doesn't always equal greater effectiveness. Maybe you need to change something there.

Well I try to mix it up mwf I will walk at 15 incline at about 4.0 for 1 hour then I do an hour (or sometimes less) of strength training....then on other days I will run for 30 mins or do the elliptical.....that's about it for cardio (I do the higher incline to try to up my calorie burn ) which sometimes is up in the 800-900 range for 1 hour and im eating basically salads with grilled chicken or tuna or turkey for lunch and dinner (low fat dressing) with a cheat day for regular meals....but if im lucky ill lose a pound in a week - then nothing the next - I also work with a trainer 2 days a week to learn how to do the excercises correctly I have definitle seen an improvement with my upper body and abs with the strength training - but still the scale wont budge much ahhhhh Thanks for the positive words!

My friends keep saying this but adding calories seems to defeat the purpose....im reading up on this now ....Thanks!

If you are not having enough calories you metabolism will slows down. You body needs fuel to continue to burn. If there aren't enough then it will think it's not getting more and hold onto what it is getting.

Anyone have tips for when you reach a plateau?

3 things:
- Try intervals in the cardio- there are tons of ways to do it. E.g. Warm up on the treadmill. Sprint for 30 sec. Walk for 90 secs. Repeat until you have reached 30 mins. The all out/rest may allow you to burn more calories than a steady pace.
- Add some good fats. Nuts, oils, etc. EVOO/vinegar on your salad instead of low fat dressing.
- As a pp said, make sure you are eating sufficient calories.

And remember that muscle weighs more than fat. If you're building strength using weights, the scale might not be moving due to that. You will get leaner/slimmer but the numbers might stay the same or even increase.

A few things seem like red flags to me:

1. WAY too much time working out. 1-2 hours a day is not necessary and absolutely detrimental. Stick to heavy weight training and a couple of HIIT sessions a week.
2. Seems like you may need more food. It's great to eat healthy but being so restrictive isn't always healthy either. I personally believe in the "If It Fits your Macros" philosophy that allows for flexible dieting. They ahve calculators on this site that can help you get started. Give it a shot!
