Anyone have Halo? Is it very violent?
My oldest just turned 9 and is asking for more mature games. It is becoming a struggle to find suitable games! I miss the days of buying games for the Wii! We already have Skylanders and Infinity. Plus all the wrestling, basketball, hockey, baseball and racing games possible.
DS is asking for Halo but we keep telling him no. I can't control what he plays at his friend's house but obviously can at home.
So..... Is it really that bad? Does anyone let their DC play it?

My SS used to play this game. I know it's violent in terms of shooting but I don't think it's the worse kind of game. I don't believe there is cursing or isn't as violent as Assassins creed or Call of duty. I think those games have a lot more mature content in terms of things they say.
It depends if you are okay with him playing games that involve shooting.
Eta: my stepson not DS lol

Thanks for the info. This is what I thought. Shooting aliens sounds like so much fun! I'm already not a cool mom because I don't let him drink soda.

It's rated M. I don't think a 9 year old is mature enough to play shoot em up kill em games to be honest. I don't even let my 15 year old play them. My nephews started playing that game amongst other M games at their dads, and boy oh boy, bad idea. But do what you feel comfy with!

To me shooting aliens is fake unlike Black Ops where it's about combat and the premise is realistic. In that game they are stabbing and shooting other people. Plus the language is really foul. If you look back to Atari, we were shooting aliens back then. So I don't think Halo is horrible for a 9yr old. Ofcourse it also depends on the child.
Halo never bothered me but other games my SS were playing at that age, I definitely rolled my eyes.

Re: Anyone have Halo? Is it very violent?
My sons play the Halo games and Titanfall. They are 10 and almost 9. I'd rather they shoot robots or aliens than humans. Truthfully I'd rather they shot NOTHING but my theory is that sometimes you have to bend a little. This was our compromise. Banning things completely sometimes leads to unhealthy obsession.
ETA I read parent reviews of all the games before deciding if I will allow them to buy them or not. Maybe try reading the reviews to give yourself a better perspective.

My almost 9 year old plays it with DH (sometimes my younger DS plays too). I only let them play it with DH.

Thanks for sharing! I did read the reviews and was still feeling unsure. Also read an article that listed it as one of the "10 violent video games to avoid". Definitely didn't help. Lol!
ITA about bending a bit. I try to be a relaxed mom most of the time but worry about exposing my other boys who are younger to the "violence". Going to YouTube some video with DH and decide.

I hate all those shooting games, Halo, Call of Duty, and GTA My son does like Skylanders...has shooting, but it is different. They are fictional characters.

Re: Anyone have Halo? Is it very violent?
I honestly think it depends on your child's personality. DH and his friends used to play Halo and I can't imagine letting my kids play it even as they get older (they're 6 and under now). To me it was very violent and all about warfare - I don't even like Lego Star Wars, though -

Re: Anyone have Halo? Is it very violent?
I've seen Call of Duty (Dh plays it) and I feel it is different than Halo....because of the aliens. Almost ALL of the video games have violence. The lego ones, mindcraft, roblox... You have to decide if your child can handle it. COD or any of the real life looking people or abusive language I wouldn't let them play.

Re: Anyone have Halo? Is it very violent?
My DD has a boy in her kindergarten class who plays that game. He is always in trouble. Granted he is not 9 but DH who likes his video games says it's too violent for him.
To me my personal feeling is introduce a Mature shooting alien game at 9, what will he expect you to bend for at 14 or 15? I will totally admit I'm pretty against video games in general. However, I think of it in terms of other things my kids ask for that are not meant for their age group but so and so does it. Kwim?

Re: Anyone have Halo? Is it very violent?
My DS loves shooting games. He's 7 and has been playing them with DH since he was 5. I'm not a fan of it, but DS is such a sweet, peaceful kid otherwise, I figured until I see him acting out, I'll let him continue.
Now he's more into the lego video games, so it seems he got all that shooting stuff out of his system!!!
Eta DS is NEVER in trouble!!! Except for talking to his friends at times when he should be listening, but he knows any kind of fighting IRL is out of the question!!!

Re: Anyone have Halo? Is it very violent?
The rule in my house is my kids are not allowed to play anything Teen, Mature, or Adults only.
They may play games rated E for everyone and games rated E +10 (games for people ages 10 and up).
My kids are 10, 8, and 6.
The ratings are there for a reason in my opinion. I would not allow my 10 year old to watch a rated R movie either.
