Half marathon runners?!!?!
So I'm planning on running the LI half on 5/4. I would like to PR this race but haven't really been training. I finished my last half in 2:06. So I'd love to finish under 2 for this one. Is that even possible only 1 month out from the race?
I have years of running experience. I ran 2 half marathons and I ran my first full this past November.
Right now I'm maintaining one long run around 6 miles and Shorter runs during the week of about 3-4 miles. How should I train for this if speed is my main goal? Should I only run to 10 miles or go past that? How quickly? I can't follow hal Higdon intermediate program since it's too late in the training. What would you do??
Tia

4 weeks may not be adequate time to have a huge impact on your time, but you can definitely get closer to the 2 hour mark.
Three workouts I find useful are tempo runs, fartleks, and hill workouts. If you want specifics, let me know.

Re: Half marathon runners?!!?!
I am no expert lol. I haven't followed a program in years. I would train up to 10 miles and do some 5ks for speed. I did a 1/2 2 years ago and did minimal training. (10 miles was my longest run) I did fine and was able to go under 2 hours.
I am doing the LI half and I did 9 this past weekend but haven't run that frequently. only 1-2x per week. Hoping to change that in the coming weeks
Good luck

i can't even imagine completing a half in less than two hours.
i've been googling how to run faster.... lol my goal is to finish a half in less than three hours maybe if i run long enough, i'll eventually be the only person in my age group.
good luck on your half!

If speed is your main goal and you are only a month out, I say slower runs are better. That may sound sound like the opposite of what you want to hear but if you are going slower now, your legs will be better rested and have the ability to go faster in the race.
I did a 1:55 in last year's LI half and hadn't been training all that much but ran on well rested legs. I ran a half two weeks later and was much slower.
BTW, I also have a half marathon on 5/4, I'm racing the Escape to the Palisades Half in NJ!

If you really want to improve your times, running slowly will not do this. You need to raise your aerobic threshold and this will only be possible by doing speed work. Even with only 4 weeks, you can improve your time by doing speed work.

I actually asked my coach about this this morning and he said 4 weeks is too soon to gain speed but he says the slower runs will help you rest legs for race day. Either way, there are plenty of schools of thoughts!
