Hi,

I am going to be working in schools and wondering what your dress code is.

Do you wear flats without socks? In my past workplaces shoes without socks was discouraged.

I would try to contact or ask people in the actual school you are going to be working at to get the most accurate information. The reason I say that is that I work in a public high school in Nassau and we have a VERY casual dress code -- during the warmer months, I wear capri pants, flip flops, and tank tops (that of course are not low-cut or show bra straps). Both male and female teachers wear jeans regularly. In my brothers district (also public on LI), male teachers are expected to wear button down shirts and dress slacks. It is going to vary widely.

Like pp said, I would try to get a feel for how others are dressing. If it's pretty casual, I would still avoid going to casual. In my school, some teachers would come in with jeans and a hoodie or even yoga pants and others were dressed to the nines. The only no no from administration was flip flops. However, someone untenured would be expected to dress nicer so no jeans for them. I wouldn't think twice about wearing flats with no socks. Not sure why that would be a problem.

There is no dress code per se. I would say most people dress business casual. Some people dress not so professional in my opinion. We can wear jeans but I rarely do. Once the weather gets nice out I do wear flats with no socks. I have never heard of wearing flats without socks being discouraged. Some people even wear dressy type flip flops. If you are new I would dress on the nicer side.

One of the principals in my school district does not allow his employees to wear open toed shoes! I think this is his way of controlling the flipflop situation. In parochial schools, the teachers have to wear pantyhose or tights.
I rthink flats without socks is fine. I do it all the time, and there are people far less casual than me.
