I had a RMR (resting metabolic rate test) to determine caloric needs and recommend it to others!
I had to share with the LIF world because I think a lot of ladies (and men) struggle with their caloric intakes, etc. I think this is an awesome thing to do AND its covered completely by most insurance plans (a lot of people don't know that!).
Back story: I've been a healthy weight for the last few years after years of battling eating disorders but now that I'm in training for a half ironman, I need to eat so much more food that before just to be healthy and have energy. Since I did have an ED, my head often says "you need to eat less", while my body says " you need to eat more!" so my triathlon coach recommended an RMR test so I had hard facts on what my body needs.
In a nutshell, an RMR test uses the concentration of the oxygen you exhale + all of your personal attributes (size, weight, age) to calculate a range of calories you need per day for resting, if you do moderate exercise, heavy exercise, etc.

So my nutritionists office has this machine (they are on 57th and 6th) and the test took ten minutes. Yes, this picture is of me taking the test. It was weird for the first minute, but I got used to breathing in and out through the tube. It doesn't hurt either .
So the results made me very happy---I received actual calorie numbers of what I need per day if I were to lay in bed, work out intensely, or even if I wanted to lose or gain weight.
I definitely think everyone can benefit from this test, not just if you are looking to lose weight, etc.
Feel free to ask questions! I can provide reference to my nutritionist too Image Attachment(s):

I have to say...great post, in honesty & information!
I have my degree in exercise science, so I'm familiar with the testing, numbers, etc....,,BUT I know what you mean about eating for the fuel. I too have an ED past, 15years ago, but do you truly ever 100% recover from the distortion? I know I doubt myself from time to time. And training for my 1/2s definitely makes me question if I'm eating for fuel, hungry, stress, etc.

You are right, my head is never 100% recovered BUT the test confirmed that I have a very fast metabolism and I need to be consuming a lot more than I was doing. For me, actual numbers provide a lot of security. I've actually upped my calorie intake since the test (I make myself consume 750 calories just on a 3-4 hour bike ride) and i have so much more energy and don't end up bonking.
When I'm just running, I burn approx. 100 calories per mile during activity so I know that when I do a 9-10 mile run on a Sunday morning, I need to replenish my body afterwards PLUS eat my normal meal. So while sometimes excess eating could be from stress etc while training for a race, its good to calculate what you know you burned and what you need to eat just to sustain life. I think that helps me recognize why I'm eating.

Re: I had a RMR (resting metabolic rate test) to determine caloric needs and recommend it to others!
I started with a nutritionist last June (to lose weight) and this was the first thing she did. With the knowledge of how my metabolism works, she was able to craft a nutritional plan designed for me. We learned that my metabolism is super slow (as she said, I'm a step above a corpse ) - so we learned that I really have to limit my sugars and carbs.
After 10 months, I'm down about 26 pounds, and it's been surprisingly easy. It's totally changed the way I approach food and exercise. I highly recommend the test for anyone interested in knowing how your body works and what it needs.
(My nurtitionist is on 54th between 2nd and 3rd if anyone's looking for suggestions - love her!)

That's amazing, great job on weight loss! Another success story of the RMR I swear, I think so many people can benefit from it and have no idea it exists.

Could you please provide me the name of your nutritionist? I'm interested in doing this too. They offer it at my gym (LIfetime) but its $250. How much did your nutritionist charge?

$0. I have Cigna and it was completely covered by my insurance.
I go to Nutrition Energy at 57 W 57th St #1211, New York, NY 10019 (646) 361-6803
If you'd rather stay on LI, it looks like Nutrition in Motion does the test and accepts a number of insurance plans. I'd call them and see if yours in included and its covered.

Re: I had a RMR (resting metabolic rate test) to determine caloric needs and recommend it to others!
I'm trying to understand the RMR thing. So it calculates the base amount of calories you need to survive, being awake, without exercising right?
So lets say you don't exercise on Saturday. And your RMR is 1200 calories. In order to maintain weight, you would need to eat 1200 calories that day.
If you continue to not exercise but want to lose weight, you would shave off no more than 500 calories from that number to lose one pound a week. (500x7=3500=1 pound of fat)
But if you exercise and burn 750 calories, you should eat back those calories to maintain weight or maybe only eat back some but not all, to continue to lose fat weekly.
Are all my assumptions good, or am I off here? I have been doing pretty good with my own routine but I love learning about this stuff and really getting a good understanding of things. Thanks for posting this!

Re: I had a RMR (resting metabolic rate test) to determine caloric needs and recommend it to others!
I would really love to find a nutritionist and have this test done. Does anyone know of any nutrionists in the Western Nassau area? Bethpage is far for me. I really want someone who is going to work with me and not give me a template diet to follow as some nutrtionists in the past have done. Thanks so much!

This is basically the logic. Definitely other factors come into play but its basically a balance. I work out basically daily but if I rest a few days, I don't eat that much less -- I'm not as ravenous but I don't change things significantly. I think its really just having that number as a baseline indicator that is helpful.

Maybe check what nutritionists take your insurance and call around? I wasn't able to find anything online but I would imagine some use it in Western Nassau.
