School mom - friendand library issue. WWYD
This mom friend and I went on a play date at a library where my DS has a card, but her DS didn't. So her DS found a book he wanted and I took it out for him.
Fast forward I got an email that the book was due. So I told her and she said she would return it. Then I get an email that it's late. So I text her and she says she forgot and will return it. So then I get another email that it's past due. She says she returned it thru the drive thru.
Book can't be found and now my DS card is suspended. The book is a $25 book. Would you take the money from her? I just feel bad because it's kind of a lot .

Absolutely - you did her a favor she should have been more careful with a library book.

I'd ask for the money, but wouldn't hold my breath waiting to get it back.
Go look in the library and see if you can find it on the shelf if it was supposedly returned more than a few days ago. One time I returned a video that the library told me was never returned. I knew I returned it, I brought it in and put it in the opening at the circulation desk. I went to the shelf, found it, brought it back up to the snotty guy who had an attitude with me and he took it off my account. Worth a shot.

This. And unfortunately I'd never invite anyone to use my card again. It's such an awkward convo to have.
I take out materials all the time for my work groups and I have clients who beg me to borrow them. They'd probably return them too but I still don't take the chance.

Knowing me, I'd just pay the $25 myself and take it as a lesson learned for the next time.

I'd do this -- but after I ask the librarians to do a "shelf check" to be sure the material is truly missing.

This happened to me - my friend paid the fine - I offered to split it with her but she insisted so I accepted and we called it a day.

If you have her pay it, have her take it directly to the library. This way she can never argue about where the money went. I know she may never show up there, but you may never get the money anyway.
