Running/treadmill question
I've never been a great runner, in fact I pretty much dread it. But when I incorporate a little running into my gym routine I see results. I started back at the gym about 3 mos ago to lose this last 10 lb from pregnancy (3yr ago). I normally do a weight class 3x per week which I enjoy. Six weeks ago I began the treadmill before these classes and I'm finally able to run 25 mins without stopping. This is a huge deal for me, lol. I don't run fast, but it's a pace I feel good at, can breathe still and my legs aren't giving out, usually between 5.6- 5.8 mph. I'm not concerned about time, not entering any 5ks, When do you start increasing your speed? I don't want to tire out and "ruin" the run when I start gasping or cramping up. Or should I just keep things as they are and just do my 25 mins, feel good and be done?

Running/treadmill question
What are your goals? If your good with time & pace but want to challenge yourself, burn more cals then increase speed. For a lil more of a challenge increase incline.

Re: Running/treadmill question
I am by no means any type of authority on this but I like to do intervals personally. I've read that there is a benefit to this, I think it has to do with changing up your heart rate (I'm sure Googling could give much better info). I just started back but I speed walk (sometimes on an incline, I just switch it up and do as much as I can physically handle) then do bursts of running for 3-5 minutes, depends on how fast I run and how tired I am. I run as hard/long as I can then slow it back down to a speed walk for 2 minutes. I honestly get bored and the time drags for me if I don't break it up.
I do that for 20-25 minutes then do the stair climber for another 10-15 mins. This is just what works for me, like I said I get bored easily.

Re: Running/treadmill question
Do intervals to increase speed. Even just for 30 seconds at a time. If you normally run around 5.6-5.8, try to do 6.5 for 30 sec for example. Over time increase the length of your intervals & shorten the recovery time. Increase the speed of your intervals little by little also. You will get faster.

Re: Running/treadmill question
If you repeat the same workout for a long time, your body will get used to it and start to consume less energy. To continue changing your body, you need to challenge it!
I'd definitely try intervals on the treadmill. Short pick ups and recoveries.

Re: Running/treadmill question
Also, try running for a longer period of time, but at a slower intensity. You shouldn't be gasping or cramping. Slow waaay down but run for a long time to help build lung and muscle capacity.
Also work in shorter, higher intensity runs, including interval training.
