Putting vanilla in paint to reduce smell
Has anyone tried this? Does it work?
Ive also heard to cut an onion in half and place it in the room. Once you are done painting, remove the onion. Has anyone tried this?

Putting vanilla in paint to reduce smell
I would never add anything to paint personally. When you are done it COULD smell like vanilla.
Honestly? The only time you have to deal with the smell is while its drying. IMHO I would suck it up for the 24 hours.

I normally would...but its our bedroom and the hallway upstairs, and Im trying to prevent my kids getting headaches from the smell!

We just painted a room in the house and used Behr's paint. We were amazed that the smell was SO minimal. Maybe see if there's a paint you can use that has minimal odors? There's a bunch now that have any.

ITA. It's the VOCs that smell, so adding more chemicals to a pot of chemicals isn't going to really help. You can get low VOC paints, very low VOC (advertised as zero, but they still have some, like Benjamin Moore), or 100% zero VOC paints, like Mythic Paint. The less VOCs you have, the less smell there is. I use Mythic in my house, and I can barely smell the paint if I stick my nose an inch away from a newly opened can.

Natura by BM is zero voc and is a great, high quality paint. I'm highly sensitive to chemicals so it's the only pair I can use. If you go the low voc route, scatter bowls with coffee grounds throughout the house, it absorbs the smell. Dump them when done.

Natura does have VOCs, just very low. The gov't says that anything less than 50g/L can be called "zero", even though 50 is more than zero... I think they have 5g/L or something around that.
From their website: "Natura Paint emits lower total VOCs than other national zero-VOC products on the market"
It's still close enough to zero for the vast majority of people who use it.
