Paint or stain dining room table?

We have a nice dining room table that I love, but the color (mahogany) clashes with the floors in our new house, which were just stained special walnut. What are my options here? I don't want to buy a new table, funds are really tight after renovations and all the other furniture we still need to buy. Any suggestions welcome!

Paint or stain dining room table?

I wouldn't do anything. I have floors that don't match any wood furniture. I think it would be too matchy

What about a table cloth in the meantime? they have some nice ones, nice quality at home goods. Ralph Lauren, etc. That's what I've been doing since our kitchen table is pretty scratched up.

Re: Paint or stain dining room table?

IMO your best bet with a quality peice of furniture is to stain the wood -

But, refinishing a large piece is extremely expensive. Especially if there is an intricate design ...........sometimes as much as buying a new piece.

Refinishing yourself is possible, but it's a commitment.

If you decide to paint, I'd get a glass top for the table b/c paint chips, scratches etc etc - but it could look really great IF that looks meshes w/ the rest of your decor.

Do you have a pic of the table?

We just stripped, prepped, and stained all of our cabinets and while time consuming, not as hard as you might imagine. Having the experience, I would totally tackle a table project.

We used General Finishes line of stains, they are amazing. Really amazing. It's only available online.

In any case, they have a gel stain that you can use that requires NO stripping. It is very easy to use once you get the hang of it. I recommended checking it out. It's a very inexpensive and easy way to refinish your table.

Google General Finishes Gel Stain, you'll be able to see lots of before and afters and get lots of info.
