Should I be "that" parent?

DD is starting Kindergarten in September. My district is only half-day. I am paying for the enrichment to make it full- day. Bussing only applies to the kindergarten portion of the day, not the enrichment. So for example, if it was AM K, she would be picked up, but I would have to go pick her up from PM enrichment. If it was PM K, I would have to drop her off in the morning and she would be bussed home.

Like everyone, I would prefer morning kindergarten. I am a SAHM for the first time this year because I just had twins in April and have a 3 y.o. DS as well. Too many kids to make the cost of daycare worthwhile in comparison to what I would take home. Anyway, DS has qualified for a pre-school via CPSE and will be bussed to a MORNING program. I would really need to be sure I am home to get him on the bus and not dropping her off. In addition, I would prefer not to have to get two infants fed and put in carseats, etc. in the dead of winter.

Do you think this sounds like a viable reason to ask for morning Kindergarten? I don't want to be "that" mom at the school before DD even starts kindergarten by making requests. And I do understand why they tell you they can't take requests... I am a teacher, I've been on the other side of the story, but I do need it.

Thoughts? Send in a note or just hope I get lucky?

Yes, I think it's a valid enough reason to try for what works best.

I think it's a valid reason.

We also pay enough in school taxes, that we should at least be given a schedule that won't make life harder if there is an honest to goodness reason for it.

Plus I think the school should hear from more parents about this stuff if it helps to get programs and schedules to better accommodate parents. (That's probably another thread though).

I'm a FTWM so I understand completely the juggling act from that end.

Should I be

Definitely reasonable.

Our district has 1/2 day too and they ask us which we prefer during screening. It doesn't guarantee everything but, they weigh the reasoning for the request into the equation.

I think you may prefer being able to drop off in the am as opposed to having to have your kindergartener at the bus stop or at class by a certain time since you DS will be being bussed for the preschool program. It really depends on what time the two schools start.

Additionally, I have found that having a pm bus drop off is easier then pick up in the pm.

Anyway, I'm in a 1/2 day district too. The AM or PM choice is dependent upon the busing company so you need to make your request to them.

It's more than a viable reason. Definitely ask.

Re: Should I be "that" parent?

I literally typed out the letter and had it ready to be mailed when the mail came the other day from the school telling me she got MORNING kindergarten. Chat Icon I got what I wanted/needed without having to ask.... whew!

I've never heard of a K program switching the kids from morning/afternoon to the opposite mid year. What district does this?
